Another shot that was taken at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Florida. After two days of very cloudy and windy weather, the sun finally started to penetrate thru and bring up the light. This finally allowed me to use a lower ISO setting and keep a high shutter speed. I found this Spoonbill close enough to reach with the 300mm lens and 1.4 extender combination I was using.

Roseate Spoonbill

Range: Southern United States, West Indies, Central America, South America

Habitat: Freshwater and saltwater wetlands
Conservation Status: Common

Scientific Name: Platalea ajaja

The adult roseate spoonbill is most noted for its stunning pink color and its uniquely-shaped bill. It is the only one of the six spoonbill species with brilliantly colored plumage. Its wings, abdomen and feathers on the side of its tail are bright pink, its tail is orange, and its legs are ruby-colored. The feather colors brighten in breeding season.

This medium-sized bird's body is rather stocky; its long legs allow it to wade into water. Both male and female roseate spoonbills have the same bright pink plumage, though males are somewhat larger and have somewhat longer bills.

Having a "built-in" spoon on its beak can be a big help at mealtime. All spoonbills take advantage of this adaptation with a special feeding style known as "head-swinging." The birds plunge their bill nearly vertically under water and swing it side to side in wide arcs. In this way, they snag a host of small animals from the lake bottom.

Their diet is made up of small fish, crustaceans (especially shrimp and crayfish), insects, molluscs (such as slugs and snails), and other small aquatic animals. Any plant material they eat is probably accidental.

Roseate spoonbills feed at day or night.

A spoonbill feeds more by touch than by sight - - a handy adaptation for an animal that often feeds in water that's muddy or clogged with dense vegetation. The horny bill is equipped with sensitive touch receptors that detect vibrations given off by prey. When something touches the inside of the spoon, the bill closes on it quickly. This keen sense of touch and fast reflexes allow the bird to feed in cloudy water, and at night.

A spoonbill will also chase prey that it detects by sight, but its sense of touch is much more reliable.

Bravo, Scott.
Perfect catch. Amazing pictured scene and pose of the bird. Charming colours and lighting. Excellent reproduction of all details of the scene including the bottom of the lake (or what else?). I also like the waves on the water surface and reflections in it. Perfect composition too. My compliments and TFS.

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Perhaps be not the most precise or aesthetically attractive image in your portfolio Scott, but it is really beautiful... and the precision doesn't get lost for the focus lack or sharpness but for the environment of the bird and the captured point of view that it produces that effect.
The details and colors are very marked with the bonus of the pleasant reflection.
Thank you and regards... Ricardo

Hi Scott,
What a stunning moment you captured here. Pure respect on the perfect timing. A photo with perfect details and exposure and the pink of the spoonbill became even more vibrant by the dark grey blue water surrounding it. I am sure you had a blast down in the sunny state.

Hi Scott
Great action shot. The fish is perfectly frozen on it's way to the gullet. Vibrant color on the spoonbill. Well done.

Hi Scott,
Still in Florida?
Great action moment catched here! Good timing!

Scott, I usually say that a great moment deserves a great photo - and here we have both of them.

I like compositions and colors. The ripple-reflection is great too.

Congratulations on the note.

'Got ya...'
Nice image, Scott.
Good decisive moment displayed; very sharp image as well.

Hi Scott,
Wonderful action captured! I´ve never seen this movement in spoonbill feeding, they always have the bill underwater. Excellent time exposure. Ten points

What a moment! Excellent capture mf!
I might have cropped the top 1/4 and made more of a rectangular presentation, since above the bird is fairly uniform with not much of added interest like the reflections below. Still Top Shelf!

Excellent action shot Scott.
The color, DOF, and exposure R perfect.
Nice sharp detail and well composed mf.
Very well done

Hello Scott,
The moment is very well captured!
Besides... Great plumage with lovely colours, distorted reflection adds to the attraction of the image...

Hi Scott

Almost I said, "Great Scott, what a lovely action shot!"

You captured this one nicely with the little fish in mid-air on its way becoming part of the food chain. A great composition with excellent colour saturation of the spoonbill and its reflection on the water. The details are well defined and sharp. The darkish surface area of the water acts as a perfect BG that enhanced the soft pink colours of the bird and made it stand out. You made great use of the early morning sun which timeously came to your aid.

Good work and TFS.

bonjour scott
eh hop dans la boite ou plutot dans le bec.

Wow Scott! What a accurate shot! The timing is absolutely perfect and the sharpness and colours are superb! I love Sanibel and I wasn´t addicted to photography when I went to Sanibel/Captiva. I would like to capture that brown pelicans diving and hitting the water like a truck coming from the sky!
