Another shot from my recent trip to Florida. Ths is a Sanderling. Nothing more relaxing than sitting down and watching these little guys run the surf line.
He was running the shorline picking thru the Red Drift Alge that was washing up on the beaches. It was not bad here, but in other locations it was very thick and decomposing, causing a great stench.

Light conditions were fairly bright but cloudy here.

Sanderling - Calidris alba

An abundant shorebird. A worldwide species of sandpiper belonging to the family Scolopacidae (order Charadriiformes). Sanderlings nest on barrens near the sea around the North Pole, and they winter on sandy beaches virtually everywhere.

Red Drift Alge or "Red Tide"

A red tide is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga (plant-like organisms). In Florida, the species that causes most red tides is Karenia brevis.
This organism produces a toxin that can affect the central nervous system of fish. At high concentrations (called a bloom), the organisms may discolor the water. However, red tides are not always red. They can appear greenish, brownish and even purple in color. Or, the water can remain its normal color.

Hi Scott

An absolute perfect shot of this beautiful little sanderliing. You are right, they are great fun to watch especially when they run away for the incoming surf and those little legs seems like they’re running at a hundred miles per hour.

The composition is excellent with great space provided for the bird. The details are very sharp as the bird is well within the range of the DOF which is clearly visible on the sand and the colours are perfectly natural. The sand faded well into an OOF area which enhances the bird and acts as a remarkable BG while the exposure was very well managed with beautiful soft lighting all around that ensured amazing contrasts in the plumage.

Great work and TFS.

I really like the light here, Scott.
I love watching these little guys too. They are hilarious.
A great POV of this sanderling with sharp details.
The red algae make a good color accent in this composition.
Very sharp details on the algae too.

Hi Scott, I've seen these guys but never photographed them. That will change with our next meeting. This is a very good shot, the detail on the bird, and the textures pulled up on the algae and sand are incredible. The colour throughout is very good. Composition wise you've done a great job of showing his environment (the surf) while also quite effectively dropping it into the background through your choice of depth of field. Awesome!

Thanks, John

These little ones are fun to watch, seeming to chase the waves out only to be chased back in return.
superb crisp details on this one, which seems to be resting for just a moment and excellent composition

I LOVE to see this! It's a beautiful bird and full of detail.
You have so many great shots from Florida you have pumped up your gallery/portfolio greatly. I feel like I'm looking at a photo in National Geographic here! I like the slightly open beak, the catch-light and the fine detail in the plumage. The Red Alge is a bonus that adds a lot of texture to this shot. The Sanderling AND the alge is in PERFECT focus. GREAT post....I'm envious a bit but in a good way.
I can't wait to get home to see ALL of your FLA. shots!
Does the Red Alge affect the birds like it does the fish?

Bonsoir Scott
C'est un magnifique oiseau que tu nous envoies ,les couleurs sont très belles ,j'aime bien la pose de cet oiseau qui semble regarder quelque chose et être très attentif.

Hello Scott,
Fine capture of this active little wader. You present the Sanderling in its typical habitat in fine lighting and with good fading Bg in a pleasing comp with the red algae. This shot of the adult bird is also nice and sharp.
Well done and TFS!

Hello Scott,
Wonderful capture.POV,warm lighting, clear details, simple BG,pose of bird and composition are excellent.

Hi Scott, wonderful bird with splendid light and colors, great pose, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Scoot.

This is very pure and sharp shot. Excellent composition. Very well done. Tfs. Stev

A magnificient capture Scott! Everything looks perfect; composition, DOF, sharpness... Colors are lovely. A high quality photo... with a great lens... :-)

Hi Scott,
It looks like that after a while sitting on the beach they started to trust you. This looks like a really close capture. I really like your eye level POV, making the bird standout from the almost simular colored beach. The pieces of seaweed surrounding the bird make the photo more dynamic. Great work on the exposure and sharpness. My only really small nit is the small OOF line in the FG, but it is for sure not detracting from the overall photo.

bonjour scott
excellente acuité,beaucoup de details et surtout l'exposition est maitrisée.

Hi Scott,
Beautiful, a delicate image with nice "pie" tones. Details and situation capture are very nice; a good job my friend

It is hard to know what to add to all of the above critiques, they all say what I want to say and ditto hardly seems to do the picture any justice.

The one thing that stands out for me is the colouring of the bird, it is so like the sand and sea in the background . In a rocky area I don't think you would see them unless the moved.

Great shot and nicely done.

hi scott,
lovely capture, sharp image with good details, looks like the bird is looking for the meals,
tfs & regards

Hello Scott,
This is a beautiful capture of this nice specie. You could take it from very close... I like those tones of colors that are very natural and those beautiful details you caught with good exposure. Water plans have many problems all over the world, here we have some lakes that are infected by blue algae and I new algae that come from New Zeland it seems...I enjoyed reading your interesting notes. People in Florida had a hard time recently... Thanks,

Excellent quality and a pleasure to view Scott. I think overcast conditions soften the light well, even it out..
I agree, nothing more relaxing than the sound of surf, and the birds dancing along the surf line.
I miss the ocean very much..Seldom get down there.
Very well done.

Hi Scott,
So you really took good advantage of this florida trip!
I like a lot this image. A simple proposal full of beautiful details.
So sharp and clear.
The inclination of the shore works pretty well for the composition, complemented so fine with the red alga.
It's so enjoyable the light there.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,

Hi Scott,

This shot is a crisp capture of a shorebird that stops in Nova Scotia on its way south... and fattens up here on the banks of the Bay of Fundy!
Seeing them in huge flocks, undulating , zooming along, landing, and taking off again to repeat the pattern is a thrill! My favourite place is Evangeline Beach.

Thanx for sharing this neat one, Scott! Thanx, Jay

PS I looked at this photo again, and I now know what I wanted to pass on. I would have preferred a tad more "space" behind the tail of the bird.

Great lighting in this perfect capture Scott. Once again both colors and details are all there. :)

Impeccable capture Scott with the beauty of the bird and of the alga with total clearness, sharpness and focusing.
F8 worked perfectly in this case achieving a focus and consequential OOF really exact.
I love harmony between the elected framing and the captured point of view.
Excellent post, thank you very much for sharing.
