While walking along the Cumberland River in Nashville Tennessee I came across this Green Heron, which was searching for food along the shoreline.

The first thing that caught my attention was the small size of this species. I'm used to the large size of the Blue Heron which I've seen many times, but the green Heron is a very small bird in comparison.

The bird didn't seem all that shy, as it let me get to within 30 yards or so before it took off with a very loud squawk.

The Green Heron is a small crow sized heron which attains a height of 16 -22". It is one of our most common herons which can be found living around fresh water ponds and swamps.

The female lays between 3-6 pale green or blue eggs. It's nest can be found in trees or bushes. They live and breed over a large area from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico and west to the Great Plains.

hello Ron

WOW ! what a very beautiful shot of this Green-Backed Heron
in his natural habitat, very fine POV, DOF and framing,
wonderful colours, excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Hello Ron.. I suppose these green herons' range only extends to the plains. I've never seen one on the west coast. The are really pretty... distinctive patterns and colors. For some reason there seems to be a blue cast to this image and also a few overexposed bright areas which distract from the bird. I tried to address both issues with a workshop.

Hi Ron , great photo here , what a beautiful bird , really good color and detail , and I like the setting very much, thanks for sharing it

To walk these paths where you speak of is to walk both in Native American lands freely and then later Colonial America where people very often traveled distances of 500 or more miles by foot. I have one cousin who travels from PA to Indiana to buy land and then back again...then returned later by other means with family. Along the way he almost was killed by a deer which he was trying to catch for food...The deer is quite an aggressive beast..some know...but this image, grand and very greenish image....I felt as I was looking at it. and wondered how many before you and indeed before camera..back in the day when pencil or other and paper was carried...I also have a small collection of these...Wonderful work in a very important part of Colonial America!

Hi Ron,

What a wonderful walk you must have had! I wish there was a river here (or even a lake). I took bodies of water for granted all my life and now I miss them. I can't imagine meeting a Green Heron. You captured him beautifully with wonderful colors and sharp details. I love the setting.
