I'm proud of this shot. I don't do birds often but I've decided to branch out..no pun intended.

This cardinal has to be the same guy who hung around last year. He has an obsession with my car...attacking the mirror and pooping on the door. That's ok - he's pretty enough to get away with it.

From All About Birds
Northern Cardinal
Cardinalis cardinalis

Cool facts:
* Population density and range of the Northern Cardinal has increased over the last 200 years, largely as a response to habitat changes made by people. However, it is listed as a species of special concern in California and may disappear there because of habitat loss.

* The female Northern Cardinal sings, often from the nest. The song may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male.

* The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder.

* Brighter red males hold territories with denser vegetation, feed at higher rates, and have greater reproductive success than duller males.

Hello Angelina,
I have seen this behavior before. They think that there is a rival in the mirror; this is such a funny comportment. I like the timing of this capture with this nice movement. I would have composed it a little less centered but it is still a nice picture and good moment caught :) Thanks,
Claudine

Great pose and a very nice picture!
My mother-in-law has a cardinal that constantly attacks the windows at her house. I wonder what it is with these colorful guys?
Ah, I found the answer in your note: * The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder.
Maybe that's where the saying: "bird brained" came from...;-)

This is a winner ladies and gentleman and you may now pick any prize on the bottom row...roughly borrowed from Steve Martins "The Jerk"...

The Cardinal, as Mario from Quebec will tell you, is a favorite of mine. And so are you and Happy Birthday to your husband Barry..and congratulations on your anniversary tomorrow.

Hello Angelina,
That's great, I've heard of our Great Tits behaving in the same way. Nice capture in beautiful light and the open wing looks lovely. I could think of a better background, but there we are, it's a nice shot anyway showing the weird behaviour of a bird.
TFS and all the best, Ulla

Hi Angelina...
Your comment gave me a good laugh.
I am glad you may start doing some birds.
Especially if they are as good of action shots like this.
As much as a mirror is not always the best of perches, your wing action and the lighting are fantastic.
This sure is a pretty bird.
Hope it will land in some trees for you.
Enjoy your week.

Hello my 'crazy' friend, Angelina,
Sorry I've been away so long. I had "good" reasons with a CAPITAL "S". REASONS.
Anyway, this is another OUTSTANDING image.
Loved your notes.
I 'owned' one of these when I lived in Ontario. Great singer.
Warm and friendly regards,
Mario.
