Just after sunrise, ten to nine in the morning of Wednesday the 15th of March 2007.
Wonderful sunrise with soft warm color tones in the sky wich was a great joy to look at and the Bald Eagles seemed to like it also.
Many of them were around that morning although temperatures were not that high with -25 degrees Celcius, without the wind chill reading.

The Nikon TC-17E Tele Extender was attached between lens and camera wich gave focal lenght of 340mm.
ISO Speed reading 400.

Symbols of U.S. Government: The Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is a large, powerful, brown bird with a white head and tail. The term "bald" does not mean that this bird lacks feathers. Instead, it comes from the word piebald, an old word, meaning "marked with white."

The bald eagle was made the national bird of the United States in 1782. The image of the bald eagle can be found in many places in the U.S., such as on the Great Seal, Federal agency seals, the President's flag, and on the one-dollar bill.

Why was the bald eagle chosen as our national symbol?

The Bald EagleThe Founding Fathers wanted to choose an animal that was unique to the United States. For six years, the members of Congress engaged in a dispute over what the national emblem should be. As a result of the debate, the bald eagle was chosen because it symbolized strength, courage, freedom, and immortality and that it would look much better as our national symbol.

When Europeans first arrived on the North American continent in the 1600's, there were an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 bald eagles, but populations have since dropped for many reasons. Many eagles were captured for getting too close to poultry or fishing nets; some were captured for falconry; and many eagles were poisoned by pesticides. In 1967, the bald eagle was included on the Endangered Species List. Federal laws, such as the Bald Eagle Protection Act, protect the bald eagle and have led to the recovery of bald eagle populations. In 2007, populations have improved and the the bald eagle was removed from the list.

Thanks in advance for viewing and comments.

Kind regards and have a nice day,

Harry

Bonjour Harry
Bravo.

Hi Harry
Exposure perfect with sharp details in the white and the very dark feathers, beautifull light with great horizon. Compo just perfect. Impossible to find a critique to this picture, so I have to focus on the location:
Dear Harry, you are repeating the same error I have done to give the correct location: Homer Alaska is lying west of Greenwich so the longitude is minus 151.5460, latitude is correct with plus 59.6449. (thanks again to Peter Geldhart for his explanation on this topic). Otherwise we are landing somewhere in Eastern Siberia and possibly it is even colder there!
As the picture is so great you nevertheless will get your 2 points ;-)

Wow - you made it to Homer? That must be an awesome place for shooting Bald Eagles. And you are bringing home a great shot - especially the light is wonderful! Great detail and landing pose! Bravo! Cheers, Klaus

Technically first class, you present this landing Bald-headed Eagle in fine lighting and in an excellent composition.

Wow! That is fantastic. How far were you from the subject. 340mm is not that long a lens for bird shooting. If this is cropped, it sure retained its sharpness and resolution.

Another one of those "OH WOW" shots...
gorgeous - fabulous composition, perfect positioning of the bird, gorgeous colors, great lighting, lots of clear sharp detail.

Harry,
a capture of amazing perfection and quintessentially condensed iconic qualities. The pose of the landing eagle, most clearly frozen in motion, is most delightful to look at, revealing an incredible number of details and different aspects from such a distance. The arrangement of all those four elements, the bird, the sky, the sea, the landing tree: just breathtakingly perfect. A masterpiece. Phantastic.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter
