While visiting my daughter and son-in-law in Phoenix, I decided to get up early one morning and hike into one of the mountains that surround the city.

You must remember that I'm from Ohio where we don't have cactus growing in the wild, so when I spotted this Barrel Cactus I just had to get a shot of it.

The sun hadn't quite made it up over the horizon yet, so I used a flash for this shot. The surrounding vegetation looked very dry and brittle which made this plump little guy seem to stick out like a sore thumb.

Hi Ron,

Hmmm, this looks familiar. So familiar that I never took a picture of a Barrel Cactus. Funny, when I lived back east it would have been a wonderful novelty but living here I hardly notice them. Great shot with such wonderful details that if I touched the picture I would get a thorn stuck in my hand.

Hi Ron,

Amazing clarity! Such natural colours with good flash using! impressive job in all around MF!
TFS and have a nice night!

hello Ron

a great close-up photo of this Cactus, with fine POV at its level,
fine focus sharpness and details, beautiful colour tones,
and i love the way the background it is blurred with showing details,

Hello Ron.
Beautiful photo. Good details, composition and POV. Very good sharpness and DOF. Nice shot.Best regards Siggi

Hallo Ron
What an interesting and most colourful photograph. I have never seen these plants with a reddish-brown colour like the one in your image and that makes it even more fascinating. It looks like ruby mesh over a big emerald, and the natural sunlight worked wonders here. The inclusion of the rocks in the picture add to the character of the scene. You did a good job on technical stuff like the composition, exposure, and focus. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day.

Hi Ron

I share your fascination and wonder - I still remember waking up in Tucson after driving down from Bryce Canyon late the previous night - the heat, light and smell of sage brush just hits you! Great shot of this cactus.

Hi Ron. awesome photo of a cactus, clear details and fine composition.
TFS and kind regards,

A wonderfully detailed image of the Barrel Cactus. I like your reference to "sticking out like a sore thumb". :) Perfectly composed and well done.

Hi Ron

Your "plump little guy" came out just dandy here amongst the vegetation of its natural
habitat. You utilised the flash light very effectively with almost no distracting shades or
evidence that normally shows because of the angle and distance between the strobe
and the lens. The details on the Barrel Cactus are nice and sharp and if you are very
bored you would actually be able to count each of those nasty thorns. This succulent
plant stand in great contrast to its dry arid surroundings.

Well done and TFS.

Hi Ron!

I also do know cactus only from pictures or from glasshouses. I would take pictures of this encounter, too. I like the simplicity of the composition and the rich details of the cactus.

Kind regards

Hello Ron,
again gives us a splendid macro today.
Just yesterday I bought two more special species of cacti.
I like very much. Beautiful framing and playback of this cactus yours.
Superb clarity and detail top.
Have a nice Saturday,

Hi Ron.

Very sharp details of this cactus in natural habitat. Beautiful off-centered framing in muted bg colors. Nicely captured looking like a barrel.

TFS and best regards.

Hi Ron,

A very nice shot, good detail and sharpness and exposed well. Also, a nice arrangement of plants. Do be careful wandering in the desert while it's still dark, as the rattlesnakes and scorpions come out at night! ;-)
