I have a difficult time distinguishing between a Cooper's and a Sharp Shinned Hawk so please correct me if my identification is wrong.

Cooper's Hawk

The Coop is a medium-sized raptor closely related to sharp-shinned hawks and northern goshawks. Adult birds have short, broad wings and long tails for navigating through woodlands and thickets. The back is bluish-gray on adult males and more brownish-gray on adult females. The large, square-shaped head has a dark cap and lighter nape (back of the head). The hooked beak is dark with a lighter colored cere or waxy membrane that covers the upper portion of the bill and contains the nostrils.

Eye color changes with age from yellow to orange and then to red. The belly and breast have reddish-brown crosshatched markings, similar to those of the adult sharp-shinned. Immature birds have longer wings and tails than the adults, and the undersides have brown streaks that extend down the breast but not so much on the cream-colored belly. The backs of both sexes are brownish. The tail has a rounded tip and alternating bands of dark and grayish feathers.

The Cooper’s Hawk is named for William Cooper (1798 to 1864), a New York naturalist who collected specimens of the hawk, which Charles Lucien Bonaparte used in officially naming and describing the bird. Cooper named and described the Evening Grosbeak in 1825, and later on became the first American to join the London Zoological Society.

Very well captured with good detail JC.Exposure is good to show detail. Pin sharp image. The bird stands out well from the background. Would have liked a more natural perch but we cannot always have it our way.
Well done and TFS
Greetings
Frans.

Hello Jane,
long time no see :-)
this is a very good picture, I doubt it could be any better with a small compact digi.
It's very sharp with a pleasant DOF. Very nice natural colours because of right exposure and White Balance.
The picture is also well composed with lots of space in front of the beautiful bird.
Great work, mf.
Regards from a cold and snowy Sweden.

Hello Jane,
Great shot of this Coopers Hawk who seems to be looking for some of your Quail. I'll bet nobody showed up while he was hanging around your patio. The detail is excellent and the colors and exposure is right on the money. Well done!!
Years ago I used to raise Roller Pigeons, and this little guy is the reason I quit. The Coopers Hawks would come down and pick them off as soon as I let them out to fly.
Ron

Bonjour Jane,
Très belle publication valorisant bien le sujet dans une belle attitude et sous une excellente profondeur de champ permettant d'apprécier la finesse des détails.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
Gérard

Beautifully sharp and well composed image of the hawk Jane. My wife and I all always counting hawk sightings wherever we go. We usually see at least one and as many as 20 (or a bit more) in an hour's drive. We have been doing this for years. :)

Hello Jane,
another lovely view of a hawk in good details. The feathers on its breast is so well seen in pleasant smoothness.
The smooth background make this composition an effective one. The claws that grabbed to the wall is so exciting to look.
The pose is special too with a slight turn.

Regards,
Foozi
