Common Name: Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel
Scientific Name: Spermophilus lateralis
Size (length) English & Metric: 9"-12" (23-30cm)
Habitat: All forest types
Diet: seeds, nuts, berries, insects, underground fungi
Predators: hawks, jays, weasels, fox, bobcats, coyotes

"Nineteen species of ground squirrels occur in North America. Bryce Canyon is home to two species, the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel and the Rock Squirrel. It is hard to mistake the two as the Rock Squirrel is usually twice the size of the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel and lacks the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel's stripes along its sides. The Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel can be identified by its chipmunk-like stripes and coloration, but unlike chipmunks, it lacks any facial stripes. It is commonly found living in the same habitat as Uinta Chipmunks."

Hi Karen!
Nice portrait of squirrel. I had never seen this specie before. I knew only the red squirrel:)
Very good capture, with fine details of the fur. Nice lighting.
A sharp composition: congratulations.
Ciao! Vanda

Hello Karen,
What a cutie! It seems to me you could afford a smaller aperture at the short focal length, which would have given your image sparkle in terms of sharpness by increased DOF. Or perhaps you could have sharpened it some more with PP. Nevertheless, I real beauty. May I try a workshop?

Thanks for your comment on my recent picture of monsoon clouds, Karen.
I notice that I too have the same make of compact camera as you have. However, I mostly use it for mundane imagery such as pictures of my students taking part in co-curricular activities. You use it very efficiently for nature photography as is evident from a cursory look at your portfolio.
This is an adorable capture of a Squirrel against the BG of raw earth. I like the relaxed pose you have captured it in.
Warm regards.

i saw quite a few Ground Squirrels on my recent trip to the Staes - they're agressive little fellas aren't they? Very vocal! I like his stood up pose here, it could be a touch sharper but that's a minor thing - lovely shot, well done!

Hi Karen,

The ground squireel is well placed in the frame. The point of view is shopwing the details and colors of the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel. The light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.
