I awoke early on Wednesday to go and meet sunrise on the Palouse. Along a stretch of backroad I pulled off and took out the "gear". All along I could hear a bird but couldn't see it. I was looking directly into the sun. It wasn't until I searched high and low with my zoom completely on..(according to my own EXIF, not the convoluted one listed here, I was at 410mm), then I saw the Redtail Hawk sitting on a post...doing the same as I. He was either watching the sunrise or scoping out the fields for his early morning prey.

The nice thing about this Canon is the ability to switch quickly back and forth between video and still. I did have my Leica with me but sensed I had no time...and I was right...the bird flew much farther out as can be seen by watching this one minute video of it.

I frequently see these birds in the air around me. Perhaps more than once in a day...however when they land I am no where near and when I am near, they do ot land...so this day was an exception. It was not until later that I heard from another that today was my 500th posting. I figured as long as it was so, I would make the short video clip as well for the icing:-)

Hi Bob,
i enjoyed your video that goes along with this alot, really helps to put in perspective this shot. Of course now we will be expecting an accompanying clip with every post ;o) I think you got your 'still' just right from it. That fence has created huge amounts of depth and the pastel colours and shimmering light are beautiful. Congrats on 500, a number not to be sniffed at.

Hi Bob,

Congratulations on #500. You must be posting one a day. Always interesting shots and wonderful notes. Here's to the next 500.

Hi Bob,
You are going fast with already your 500th upload. it shows the great dedication to photography, nature and this site. Your presents is always a positive one and with the intention to teach and learn.

A wonderful clasic pose of a hawk on a pole. The poles do their work perfectly and draw the eye to your main subject. Although the photo isn't of a high quality, the video camera did perform.

Namastay Bob,
CONGRATULATIONS on your 500th post here on TN. A very well composed landscape with nice colors. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Bob and many congratulations on reaching such an incredible landmark: 500 posts!
There are few members here who can be proud of saying they contributed with such a vast number of photos, but in your case, it's much more than that: it's also well written notes, great critiques and good inputs on the forum discussions. We all should be very thankful for that!

This is a lovely shot and to me it expresses this state very well. The lone hawk standing on that pole looking at the ones in the distance (the photos you've shared) while he has pretty much just as many to go in the future :)
Technically, i also like the nice backlight effect here and also the composition, with the diagonal curve created by the fence.
Great work, once again, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Bob,
Congratulations for the 500 posts. Very suitable picture to celebrate that with certain symbolism. Very beautiful landscape displaying the hawk and its hunting ground. Harsh sunlight suits well this picture creating interesting atmosphere. Good composition with effective lighting and colours.

Another great image of the Palouse bathed in early sunlight. Beautiful soft colours and I like the sheen and the different vertical strokes presented here. The solitary bird gives a new dimension to the image. Very nice composition. Thanks for sharing this great image.

Hello Bob.
A beautiful picture, illustrated with a interesting video.
The declivity in the soil caused a interesting visual effect.
Very good chromatism and luminosity also.
Congratulations for your 500th post on TrekNature!

Hello Bob! Wow a great milestone and a great shot! I love the way you used the long focal to get that effect, well done my friend!

Hello Bob

A wonderful rural scene. The hawk standing sentinel is a striking image as my eye follows the rustic, rolling fence line.
The shot has a warm, airy feel to it and the lighting is well handled.
Congratulations on your 500th post.
I looked at your gallery and you have a treasure trove of images there.

Hello Bob,
Congratulations for your 500th posting. I almost cannot believe it, 500!
I looked also at your video, which gives a good view on the surroundings of this patch of earth shown with this fine and well composed picture. What I also appreciate here are the subtle colours of the landscape. The presence of the bird on the fence is of course a plus, too.
Un grand merci

WOOOW, CONGRATULATIONS BOB, for your splendid 500th post on TN, thanks for this wonderful perspective on lovely fields, great composition with hawk, I like a lot, BRAVO my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Bob,
This is a beautiful composition with focus on a bird of prey. The rest seems to be man-made - wheatfields and fences - but that's life where you're now I suppose. Man's footprints are everwhere!

Hi Bod,

Congratulations with no 500,a nice composition of this hawk on this post,I like the more or less diagonal composition, you have chosen your POV very well, thanks for sharing and upto the next milestone, regards,

Wow Bob. That is a big number. You have done really well here in TN and always pleasurable to read your notes as well the critiques you have made. Nicely isolated poles with the sole bird perching on it against the pasture in warm colors. A lonely view but not actually reflecting your participation here in TN. Well done and have a wonderful weekend ahead. Regards. Jusni

Hi Bob,
well a mighty congratulations on posting your 500th shot!! :-))
You've taken over me in photos! :-D
A very nice photo of this Red-Tailed Hawk.
The fact that we can see this bird's habitat is very good.
Excellent composition.
Great video to go with it :-)

I've been inspired by each one of your shots so I look very much forward to more.

All the best Bob.

I'm taking a second look at this, Bob, and small wonder: You tell a great story with it! The composition is what makes it especially appealing. I like the bird so well positioned atop the wending fence, the diagonal accent of the foreground post, the lines of the fields. Way to seize the moment! And a special congratulations on this your 500th post.

5 centuries, as we'd call it in cricket lingo! A milestone, indeed!and what a remarkable journey you've tanken us through!
Thanks a ton, Bob!You've educated us a lot more than text books can ever do!
God Bless you!

I've missed so many of your photos. I'm not sure when I disappeared from the site originally. ha ha

Wonderful shot. Love the curving fence and the lone hawk. Again, you captured a feeling of solitude - not loneliness but solitude. Well done!
