[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

Something wicked this way comes.

A simple B&W conversion. I thought it appropriate. Fall is still a few days away, however.. in the wilderness, I and folks like me prepared for winter....in spring. The winter season is one of the harshest in the Pacific NW Mountains. It could be a day of 40 degrees with some sun on one day and yet on that night it became a insect turned to beast.

This picture shows such a day. It is a fresh snowfall in the wilderness. The mountains are granite, subject to hydro problems as they freeze and that. As a natural lever, this action causes granite boulders to split even more and eventually either fall down on what passable roads exist, but in worst case, they will start a snowball effect. This will cause either landslide, mudslide, avalanche or other. While this is not a danger to a person in the way, it can be a deterrence of the sort that nature can only bring upon man, not itself.

This road based in clay and rock is freshly covered with sand which will dissipate in a matter of hours, making the road hazardous for all unprepared. Yet through this exit was my only escape to what little civilization lived near me. In emergency I have seen emergency crews stuck in 5 foot snow even though they carried chains and winches. A chimney fire will destroy a life with no help. A heart attack will end in death.

Here lies much of nature...covered in white.

A beautiful scene with each hill rising higher until the peak. Snow has a way up making things beautiful. Your story reminds me of a time I was flying to Maine and happened to sit beside a young man who was transfering there. He told me of how his neighbors were attempting to get him prepared to survive the winter.

The thin layer of snow on the road looks dangerous alright.
Must drive carefully, if you have to.
The B&W medium suits the mood of the scene.

Beautiful shot...love it in b&w. There's always something about b&w...can't really explain it...it's like a memory and a feeling.

Hi Bob. I feel cold just looking at your picture then i read the notes now i am freezing. great winter shot showing just how hard nature can be. this one is better in black and white. shows the detail in the trees so well. TFS.

Winter in black and white, Bob. Wicked indeed! Or, as we Mainers used to be sometimes wont to say, in a curious convergence of seemingly contradictory colloquialism: wicked good! :) With apologies to that waste of a fine bit of Shakespeare, this does seem a good subject for B&W, well composed, as usual, with interest added by both the road and the background and foreground tree line and line of trees. The trees are nicely limned with snow. After a hint of autumn chill these last days in Wisconsin, we're headed back to 70s and 80s, and I'm all for it. The white stuff will come soon enough.

Not the 's' word!!!! Beautiful and great choice to convert to b/w I can feel the chill and almost see my icy breath. Beautiful.. TFS
