This photo was one of my more difficult to get. The sun was starting to peek through, but about the time I noticed this doe, I also heard the sound of shots and barking dogs. To make matters worse, there was a dog on the loose where I was.

The doe stayed here for a couple of minutes but it took time to drop the tripod (without killing myself or the camera). She seemed calm enough at first, but then when a black dog went flying by, she bolted.

She, at the time, seemed more curious about me than afraid. Weather conditions aren't the best as you can see. I dealt with blowing snow, a bit of wind, clouds, and bits of sun. Also, she was pretty far away from me, so it meant zooming in all the way and just hoping for a decent outcome. Given the circumstances, I'm satisfied with this particular photo.

Oh, and an update about my mom. She will be coming home from the hospital in the next few days with extended nursing care. I will stay with her, popping up here whenever I can - that's why I haven't been here. Trust me, I miss all of you. However, I'm thankful to still have me mum. Thanks to the many of you for the kind notes/expressions.

Hopefully, I'll be able to sit for a couple hours here tomorrow. :)

Hello Kathy

What a beautiful winter post card like image.
the lighting is wonderful and illuminates the winter wonderland.
you have captured an excellent pose and expression on this doe.
Very good POV and DOF.

Hi Kathy,
Deer pictures do seem to be the thing of the hour from what I can see currently on the main gallery. A lovely capture and perfect decisive moment as it looked back at you. The contrasts here were very difficult with the bright snow and dark subject but you have done a good job.A very attractive composition and good detail....well done. I wish your mother a good recovery.
Regards, David

Kathy,

I like that she is aware of you, as interested, perhaps, as you are. Very pretty scene with the snow. You did well with the exposure, I like the comp.

Hi Kathy,
Fine shot of this doe and snowy trees.
You achieved good focus detail, pov, and pleasing composition.
Really did well with the exposure in the difficult light also.

Awesome shot Kathy. Put a red nose on this one and you have a young Rudolph. A little more seriously though, this deer looks very natural standing here with that amazing snow background. Very good lighting throughout, and handled very well by yourself I might add. The composition follows all the rules (sometimes following the rules is good), with the positioning etc. The look back over the shoulder put its head in the perfect position.

Thanks, John

Definitely your best shot yet...and from what you say it wasn't easy to get..I know the terrain you were in and the conditions..it is quite the feat...congrats!
Bob

Wonderfully composed...great over-the-shoulder glance there.
Perfect exposure - well done!

Hi Kathy,
