Because speed is the pronghorns' main avenue of defense, that is a principle attribute that females look for in a mate. This fellow has rounded up some females but they have the final word, not he. Therefore he is hoping that he will be chosen.

If peak speed and endurance were once key to survival, one might expect pronghorn females to pick fathers for their offspring on the basis of vigor and athletic prowess, which is exactly what females do. When the mating season begins, males work to herd groups of females. But as soon as a female is ready to mate she begins to attempt escape, leading the male on sprinting chases and drawing the attention of challenging males. Females typically stand back and watch as males struggle to fend off challengers, then choose the victor as their mate.

I'll be away for a week or so. We're going to southern British Columbia looking for bald eagles.

Happy shooting!! : )

Hi Evelynn,
this sure has my eye today! The light has such an attractive golden hue to it and of course the subjects are superb.I have seen many of these animals in eastern Alberta and every time I did not have a camera with me and now with the advent of digital cameras,I almost always have one.The diagonal slant the pronghorns have in the pose works very well for the point of view. The banding the last female has on her neck looks very distinctive and the male's horns likewise. These can not be mistaken for any other animal in North America and you have caught them with very good detail and colour.I wish you luck while in BC and I hope you get tons of eagle photos and have a safe trip. Bob

Hello Evelynn,

Your photo looks great! It has a very fine composition with the three deers in one plane and the bock in an other. The image is very sharp showing excelent details both on animals and grassess around. The light you have captured in your photo is very nice. The warm colors of grassess and furs look very nice and blends happily together.

Thank you for sharing,

Dear Evelynn
Good composition and what a light!

Hi Evelynn

A very nice close-up of this little pack of pronghorns here!
Interesting note on their mating ritual and a lovely photo to suggest that, as well. I hope after all his trouble that at least one of those galls chose him :)
Very beautiful warm light that makes all the colors shine so nicely.
Excellent DOF as well, to keep all of them in very good focus.

Bravo and TFS

PS: the best of luck for your Bald eagles shots!!!

A wonderful capture Evelynn,
They sure blend in with their surroundings, such beautiful animals. You caught them all lined up and enjoying a bit of lunch.
I've only seen antelope once, and that was in 2000 when Rosie and I took a three week trip out West. I remember watching them bound off like they had springs in their legs. TFS.

Beautiful picture, Evelynn, it seems that the Grand Teton National Park is filled with many beautiful animals, I almost feel you are in Africa! I am surprised at the different species and the diversity found. We don't have so many species here. This is a great shot too, with the beautiful colour of the pronghorns with the same colour being repeated in the grass. Thank you!
