I found this gorgeous Black and Yellow Garden Spider ( Argiope aurantia )in the meadow at the wildlife sanctuary today basking in the sun. Judging by the size I would say it is a female as she is much larger than the male. The webs of these spiders are spiraling vertical orbs that radiate out from the center. After she fills a brown paper like sac with her eggs she will die and the eggs hatch in the autumn. They over winter in the sac and in Spring go about their merry way.

These spiders range from southern Canada and throughout most of the US. They can usually be found in meadow like habitats and prefer a sunny location.

points later.

Lesley, Yesterday I checked the "inventory" of spiders posted to TN and noticed no Yellow Garden Spiders. Went out, found one and got some shots. So guess who has beat me to the punch? You had the benefit of the sun to make the yellow nice & bright although some shadow has crept in at the head a bit..still a very nice photo!

WOW! Nice take. I love spiders and this is a great capture. We call 'em "butter spiders" in SA. Sharp detail and a nice note.

Veru good Lesley
Nice colours, good details and great DOF.

Beautiful spider, and not one that I've seen. The colours and composition are excellent, the photo overall is of high quality. My only negative is that the body and carapace look slightly out of focus. Well done. You can generally differentiate males and females from the shape of the palps, the male palps usually have a more bulbous end, however this may not always be apparent until the spider is sexually mature. Also as with many species the young will feed off the mothers body when she dies.

Very clear picture with good details in the web too. Colours are great and thecomposition with the spider in the one side of the picture is very good. Good note too.

Amazing picture. I never saw so many spiders till trek.nature. I am just amazed at their colors, designs, and lives.
