Black-crowned Night-Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax)

For a week I have been trying to get a photo of what I think is an Osprey roosting on a antenna mounted on a pole overlooking a canal next to the house where I live. On this day I came home just before sunset and tried sneaking around the house to photograph it. Again she eluded me but a Night Heron from whom she stole the perch was in a tree next to the canal. As it took flight I followed it to a little bayou across the street. To my surprise there were two Night Herons perched on poles. I got as close as I dare go and took many photos at different magnifications. It was near dark but I thought the photos were coming out great...Until I up-loaded them. All were blurry or out of focus. My tripod was only fifty feet away and I was stupid not to get it. Anyway this was the best shot. They roost next to where I live so I think I will have more opportunities at a better photo but for now....

Nice motive and story. I guess it is difficult to observe these rare and shy birds. I hope the heron birds will come back when you have a tripod in place.

Subject is great and I like the composition. It has almost a poetically lonely feeling to it, doesn't it?
I never have my tripod when I need it! Of course by the time you would have retrieved the tripod, these babies would have flown.
Still, though a bit fuzzy, it has a nice feel to it.
