I was at our local Nature center looking to try and capture some macro shots of Dragon and Damsel Flies. Nice soft evening light, but to breezy for serious macro shots. I stumbled into two families of Canadian Geese in the tall grass at the edge of the lake. When they jumped in the water and started swimming away, the babies from the one family swam away from their parents and joined in the other family. Soon this one mother had 17 babies following here around the lake.

Well that was a shot I could not pass up. I had my 180 macro lens with a 1.4 extender attached. Not the best lens to be using in this situation, but I just tried to make the best of it. I just had to wait until they were the right distance and formation to capture the shot. Cropped off the top and bottom of the frame to create the panoramic composition. Not as sharp as it should be, but it has a very high cuteness factor.

Hi Scott

This is really a fantastic shot! One mom and 17 !!!! babies...you really have to be a super-mom for that :))
Despite having a macro lens, you really managed a splendid shot here!
The POV is really good and the low and warm evening light made sure you alse benefited by some lovely tones and shadows. The reflections on the water are also cahrming and add to the overall impect of the shot!
Great exposure and superb composition, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: Did you get any macros in the end? :))

Hi Scott,

High cuteness factor is correct! This is adorable and you caught all 18! I love them and the ripples in the water. But what's the end of the story? Did the one mom keep all the kid or did the other mom get hers back?

Jane

Great shot. Geese really do a great job taking care of the young ones.

What a big family you have pictured. It is really panoramic picture. Amazing pictured scene and impressive cropping. You are right: evening sun is so nice, mirror reflections on the water surface are wonderful as well as the great are DOF and sharpness of the image. Perfect job and my best wishes.

Scott this is absolute beauty. This is real beauty.I am just wondering how beauty it would have been when you look at them in real scenario. bravo tks ganesh

Hi Scott,
Very nice tranquil & pristeen capture of this family of these migratory birds and sometimes a better subject than dragon or damselflies. I think your lens config. worked out pretty darn good. :)

What a lovable creation with your 180 macro with extender, Scott!
The formation of the little babies following the mother goose has been beautifully captured against the greenish BG of water with reflections on it.
Thanks and regards.

Scott, the horizontal composition is really great; besides, lovely warm shades all around in this lovely image.

Excellent sharpness and dof. The texture upon the water is great, as well as the reflections.

bonjour scott
c'est une sacrée famille que vous avez pris en photo.
tres sympa.

Hello Scott,
Beautiful scene, your title fit perfectly and remind me the song with the same name.
Beautiful and delicate compòsition with only water and reflections in it. Maybe a there is a lack of space near the adult bird and pic border, but´s the only thing that I can tell could be better, in my opinion, the rest is excellent.
best regards
Hernán

Hello Scott,
Just an amazing conga line you captured here this is diffinately the longest I've seen. Thanks for sharing Scott.
Rick

Hello Scott,
It is indeed high on the cuteness scale :) I like this unusual composition and low POV. Colors and environment look great! You caught nice reflection in the water too. This picture made me smile, thanks! :)
Claudine
PS, I wonder how many pictures on this site have the same title, lol ;)

Wow you made the record with this bunch I guess. , its like a whole class. Have to admit on photographil skills it could be better but the number is outstanding.

....wonder if she gave them back when she had enough of babysitting? Nice capture, great story told!
Cheers
Otto

Oh my goodness! ...and they are already pretty big. There must not be very many predators there. Definitely a 10 on the cute scale.

Evelynn : )

Hi Scott,
Ever heard of the song with this title? When I saw it, it poped up immediately. It seems that this mom is the babysitter for the entire gang of geese. I've never seen some many chicks following one mother. Sharpness might not be the best, but the colors and light are wonderful. I really love the subtle green reflections.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Scott,
Perfect title and I like the panoramic comp mf. You made the most of the 180mm and 1.4x here :) Well done!
