On the second day of my trip to Alaska this year we had quite a bit of snow in the morning.
Temperatures were not that bad with -12 to -15 degrees celcius, but there also was 25 to 30 mph wiind wich did'nt make it more pleasant to be outside and make shots of the Bald Eagles.
After a little pep talk to myself I desided to go outside and try to make some panning shots of the eagles in flight.
Did put my Nikon D2x with the 70-200mm VR lens and TC1.7E II converter attached on an aperture of 5.6 and ISO 400 and did wait for what would come.
The camera had a hard time with AF because of all the flakes of snow it was'nt easy to focus on the bird.
After 2 1/2 hours I did go back to my nice, and above all things, warm hotel room to upload the images on to the laptop in the hope there would be some decent ones.
This is one I am verry happy with and therefore wanted to show to you.
Thanks in advance for viewing and critiques.

Warm regards and have a nice day,

Hi Harry,
Very impressive. I will not write more, if you excuse me I just want to watch and enjoy this beauty :o)
Bravo and TFS

Hi Harry
Obviously it is a big mistake to stay at home in bad weather conditions.
The snowflakes give a big plus to this capture. Not only a great flight shot but also great ambiance.
Again a perfect exposure on the white feathers, which is great.

Hello Harry,
Wonderful. Great shot of flying eagle.
Superb focus and POV.

What a superb result Harry, well worth the effort. I'm you look back in 20 years and have a real story to tell.
The eagle is pin sharp amongst the snow, which seems to blowing near horizontal. Dispite your hardship and the difficult conditions, its the snow that really make this image special.
An excellent study, there is nothing to fault it in my opinion, well done.

Absolutly amazing Harry, another stunning image, I bet you are so pleased you had that pep talk to yourself.
For the conditions and the slower shutter speed you had of 1/125 this is amazing. The detail exquisit, makes me feel like I'm there looking up myself. Your panning was spot on, pin sharp where needed.

On se demande presque si ce n'est pas un dessin. La netteté de l'oiseau est parfaite.

Hi Harry,
Fantastic picture of Bald Eagle in-flight. You did get the bird in focus even those snowflakes all over. Very well done and tfs.

Excellent shot!!! I thought you would have got it on manual focus as AF would be too difficult with the snow .. but you got it on AF!! congrats!

Lovely tight focus on the eye, snow makes it very interesting - almost unreal! Excellent DOF, lighting and cropping.

Hi Harry,

Your Nikon delivered a gem. Well done...

Hello Harry,
Though it seems strange to see wintery shots when the summer sun is blazing I must give you credit for an excellent in-flight capture of A Bald Eagle flying in a blizzard. The snow flakes do not seem to have prevented excellent sharpness in this superb capture.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

This is one of the truly great photos, Harry! Congratulations!
Not only is it technically perfect but the snow also makes it more interesting and captures my attention.

Hi Harry,
This is fantastic, I love the layering snow effect captured in this image as it shows the eagle acting naturally in the sometimes normal Alaskan weather condition. :)

Hi Harry

Wow - amazing shot - the eye is super-sharp and the colours great. The blurred snow is the 'icing-on-the-cake' - excuse the pun!

Hello Harry,
A most impressive shot, definitely worthy of your efforts, and definitely a favorite for me. I've been to Homer and it's a top place for photographing bald eagles. But this masterpiece of yours has surpassed anything I've seen so far. Congratulations.

It's like a painting, beautiful work, excellence on all counts.

Nikon D2x with the 70-200mm? Oh if I only had my legs back and my youth...and such a beautiful instrument as your camera lens combinations. It has been a dream I will never realize...

This is a National Geographic Cover my friend. Of course you already knew that. That is how wonderful it is....You are a talented man! Very much so and it is a pleasure to be able to see your work.

Hello Harry,
Superb image, I think the frozen fingers were worth it :-) I've seen your work on PhotoSIG and I'm very impressed. This is excellent, the shutter speed is just right to add the streaks of snow which gives a real sense of movement. Great panning too. I think the post-processing on this is better than the PhotoSIG version, you've really brought out the detail in this one.

Interesting note to Annick also, I'm been planning a trip to Alaska for a while and while I'd identified Homer as a place to go to, it's useful to me to know the best times to go. I'm hoping to go to Haines in November.
Best regards,

Muy buenas Harry
Una toma preciosa de esta magnífica ave, la nitidez es de 10 y los copos de nieve le dan mucha fuerza a la foto.
Mis felicitaciones.
Un saludo

A splendid picture, Harry,
Great POV, very fine colors, details and composition !
I`l give it a 10

Dear Harry, I think one of the highest levels in nature field photography is flying birds. Under snow even a harder job. I wish I can visit Alaska someday. I have already seen bald eagles in wild while in a trip to northern USA, they aren't less than fantastic. Very well done.
