Northern Cardinal

Juvenile similar to female, but with black bill.

The brilliantly colored Northern Cardinal has the record for popularity as a state bird: in the United States, it holds that title in seven states. This common bird is a winter fixture at snow-covered bird feeders throughout the Northeast, but it only spread to New York and New England in the mid-20th century.

Population density and range of the Northern Cardinal has increased over the last 200 years, largely as a response to habitat changes made by people. However, it is listed as a species of special concern in California and may disappear there because of habitat loss.

The female Northern Cardinal sings, often from the nest. The song may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases, but the female may sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male.

The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder.

Brighter red males hold territories with denser vegetation, feed at higher rates, and have greater reproductive success than duller males.

Hi Jane,
Beautiful Northern Cardinal this with such lovely colours. Immaculate sharpness on its plummage and the crest looks fabulous. Great POV to portray it and the coloured gravel as BG looks stunning and innovative. I like its elegant pose. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Jane,
It is fascinating to see a juvenile with an almost black bill that will turn to a straw color when adult. Yet in this sharp and well presented shot you also show the developement of the red plumage of this young male Northern Cardinal.
Thanks to you I have learnt a lot about Northern Cardinals and Pyrrhuloxias.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Jane,
This one is a real beauty! What a terrific plumage and lovely colours! Excellent close shot, very sharp and the gravel behind fits well in colour. It must be pretty tame?

Hello Jane

A wonderful close up shot of this beauty.Excellent detail and colour in the plumage.I read the excellent and informative notes and had to chuckle. We had a male cardinal sit at our kitchen window for hours and now I know why.I always know when the male cardinal is at my feeder because it emits a high click sound every couple of seconds as it enters the area and feeds. The rose-breasted grosbeak makes a similar sound too,but not as loud. The lady cardinal is so shy it's a wonder she ever gets to eat.Well done on this very close shot ,it almost looks like a pet standing there.TFS

Even with us, humans, this is quite true. This is called:
"Survival of the fittest".
Love those lovely colours on it.

Jane, I have the feeling that sharpness could be a little bit better, but it's just an opinion.

I like pov and compositon. A very nice image.

Hi Jane

I love to see pictures of female cardinals (Claudine can vouch for this). I wish we had them in England. I have never seen a youngster. Great hairdo! Lovely colours captured here and a nice sharp shot

Hi Iane, lovely little bird with splendid colors, great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
