[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Not much time for any new nature photography lately, so I hit my archive of butterfly shots. This Tiger Longwing was locked in a physical struggle with this Postman Butterfly over this tiny flower. The Tiger prevailed and pushed the Postman off.

A tripod and cable release were used here. Fill flash exposure compensation was set to -1/3. They paused just long enough to get off this slow shutter speed shot.

This photo was taken at the Missouri Botanical Gardens Butterfy House.

Tiger Longwing Butterfly

Scientific Name: Heliconius hecale

The Tiger Longwing butterfly originates from between Mexico and the Peruvian Amazon. These pretty butterflies are pollen eaters rather than surviving on food stored from the laval stage or on flower nectar. The eating habit of the Tiger Longwing attributes to its longevity of several months.

What a beautiful shot,details are fantastic.Lovely composition&POV too.

Hi Scott
Wow...two butterflies at one time..awesome!
Excellent detail and colours...I'm curious as to what type of flower they are on. It looks like some sort of succulent. It's to bad the butterfly on the right has part of his wing cut off but besides that it just great.

Hi Scott, great capture of this territorial battle between the butterflies. I didn't realize they would fight like this for food. It's very nicely composed with great colour.

Thanks, John

Hello Scott,
Excellent capture of the main butterfly in this shot, the Tiger Longwing. IT is sharp and well composed against a fine bokeh green BG. The other butterfly is not that much of an asset in this shot except that it helps to emphasize the color of the Tiger's antenna.
Nice shot all in all!

Hi Scott,
Excellent DOF, great title :)
Sharp details with very good color and exposure. I like the added interest of the postman b-fly, showing the daily competition for food so well.
Very well done.

I love the title. It does look like crossed swords. Lovely vivid colours, nice moment captured and good sharp details. Excellent DOF and POV as well

bonjour Scott,
voici une belle image macro, la composition est dynamique. La couleur est riche, mais ça manque un peu de clareté et de netteté.
Je tente un petit ws.

Hi Scott,
A very good POV to show this meeting!
I like the way you managed to compose the image, so good the poses of both insects, in this fighting/feeding moment.
It's very good the nicely blurred background, it stands out the subjects here.
Congratulations and thanks for shae it.
My best regards,

bonjour scott
une belle photo avec un bon POV et aussi la netteté qui est bonne,je trouve juste la photo un peu "voilée".

Hi Scott.
Now I cannot follow all pictures and I have almost missed yours. Pictured scene is great. I like your impressive POV and excellent croppingcomposition so much. Selected DOF, sharpness of the butterfly and plant are perfect. Well illuminated and coloured smooth BG is also fine. Bravo and best regards.

Hi Scott, elegant composition with splendid butterfly, great details and wonderful colors, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Scott

An incredible shot with fascinating action between the 2 butterflies. While it is possible that many of us have seen this behaviour before, but I don't think there is much evidence that indicates any success in capturing it. You did a great job to seize the moment.

I like the composition and POV. You mentioned the fact that you do not have much time for new photography lately and I just wonder if it was maybe a case that you did not have enough time to do the PP for this posting as well. I had a look at the workshop that was done and although Gaetan brought out some lovely colours in the butterfly I was not much impressed with the artificial manipulation of the BG. No big deal in it though, but I thought I'd do a quick workshop too just to pep it up a little bit while still maintaining the original BG colours. Although your photo is great I felt it could do with a little more colour saturation, contrast, and a bit of sharpness adjustment just to bring it to its full potential and glory while it also removed some of the "smokiness" on the posting. Hope you don't mind.

Anyway, good work and TFS.

PS. Just as a matter of interest, do you perhaps know what kind of flower that is? Is it maybe something in the Euphorbia family? Very attractive and captivating little blooms.

Hi Scott

Wow... what a macro! No nits here my friend, a perfect image! :-)

Hi friend,
well observed and captured!
superb macro! Great details and sharp!
