[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was walking along one of the lake trails about 10 days ago when I noticed a small patch of wild sunflowers (Helianthus annuus). They were mostly in the shade. Soon a beautiful male Gulf Fritillary fluttered by and landed on a flower that had reached a small pocket of sun. It looked as if the butterfly was in a spotlight.

I am trying to improve my photography and get as much from the camera and lens as I can, so I appreciate a strict critique. If you see weaknesses in any of my photos, I hope you will point them out to me. It seems that a recent trend on TN for many members is to only praise, but I love suggestions for improvement also.

Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae):

Identification: Upperside bright orange with black markings; 3 black-encircled white dots on forewing leading edge. Underside brown; forewing with orange at base; both wings with elongated, iridescent silver spots.

Life history: Males patrol for females, who lay eggs on many parts of the host plant. Caterpillars feed on most parts of the host. Adults overwinter in the south.

Flight: Throughout the year in south Florida and South Texas, January-November in the north. Number of broods has not been determined.

Wing span: 2 1/2 - 3 3/4 inches (6.3 - 9.5 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Various species of passion-vine including maypops (Passiflora incarnata) and running pop (P. foetida).

Adult food: Nectar from lantana, shepherd\'s needle, cordias, composites, and others.

Habitat: Pastures, open fields, second-growth subtropical forest and edges, city gardens.

Range: South America north through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to the southern United States. Wanders north to the central United States; rare northward.

Fine capture of a Gulf Fritillary...Magnificent detail of the butterfly and the out-of-focus flower emphasizes the sharpness of the image...The colors of the wings are surrealistic, almost as if painted on...Very well done...TFS

"I'll Be Back"

I think this looks about perfect. With the lighting and background it could almost be studio posed. With ISO-800, I'm surprised there isn't more background noise. I have backed off to ISO-640 because of noise. Well done. Reid

Wow Ken,
You were in the right place at the right moment. A superb capture here, very impressive. The light of course is magical. Such wonderful detail. Wow, again.
Cheers,
Debbie

Hi Ken,
Fantastic shot of this beautiful Fritillary sitting on this majestic sunflower. Such rich and vivid colours and very sharp details with a spot-on focus. Rightly said, the lighting seems like is a spotlight and it presents a tremendous effect. The smooth BG highlights the subjects well and you have captured it with an excellent POV. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
