Maple!
Genus Acer are commonly called Maples. There are approximately 125 species, most of which are native to Asia, but several species also occur in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. Maples are variously classified in a family of their own, the Aceraceae, or (together with the Hippocastanaceae) included in the family Sapindaceae. Modern classifications, including the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification, favor inclusion in Sapindaceae.

These two maple trees grow near the side of the road on the Colville Native American sovereign land in the wilderness of Washington state. They appear as younger trees but much larger ones are nearby, most untouched by human hands and left as the road was made by horse in the olden days...back in the late 1800's when this tribal sacred land was also a convenient horse and man resting place. Yes. I have pictures of the old home and hotel which was called a way station for folks traveling from the east... and for postal workers in the days of peace after the tribes had become docile under the reign of gold which men in blue sought to protect.

I have a picture somewhere on this database called the Chiefs Tree or some such. The chief of this particular group is still alive and calls himself only a man, not an elder and he constantly drives his truck at age 95, wandering the woods in a quest for what he says is "looking for a squaw". But he has a small smile on his wrinkled face as he speaks these words to me and yes. It is true.

Chiefs Tree is mostly dead now with some green every year and an eagle or perhaps more. They all look the same to me...Bald Eagles they are of course, which perch atop the tree every year. Some think it is for reasons of prey or rest....but I know in my heart that they're guardians of Chiefs Spirit. I did not make it up. It is an Archetype of very olden days which still holds water. Perhaps some day I shall post on my own database, a picture of the way station. It was hard to picture, having mostly decayed from decades of rot and snow....and hot summers and then fall again. when these pictures were taken a few years ago.....on native land most Spirit Filled!

A perfect illustration of the effect of changing seasons and also the beauty of aging that we often don't recognize in our youth-obsessed society.

Hi Bob. As angelina said why did i not recognise this sort of colour and beauty in my youth. great compostion in the two pictures.warm colours and good detail in the leaves. well done TFs. great notes again.

The camera doesnt matter its the composition and eye of the photographer that makes a picture and you have captured wonderfully rich colours perfectly lit to show the beauty of the autumn (fall to you I guess!!) As ever a brilliant note that makes the picture a story. Top work sir.

Hi Bob,
Wonderful depiction of this transition. Lovely colour tones and superb lighting to highlight the changing scenes. Amazing, life forms go through the same cycle - the youth is always buoyant and the aged so mature. Excellent POV to portray these scenes and very nicely composed. Kudos.

I love the change of colors, the transition of one season to the next in front of me. It also shows the season of change, the leaves aging, and though they will eventually dry up, wither away, and be blown from their tenuous hold, new life will replace the old. You've caputred that well - terrific composition and wonderful colors.

Excellent idea showing us the transition in process. Good clarity and colors! Fall won't be too far away here. This gives me the idea to start selecting some spots to do before, during, and after shots. Well done.

Wonderful to see how the colours change, isn't it!
Here the fall seems to be just around the corner already. The kids will be off to school a week tomorrow, the college is hosting orientation week, and sometimes the nights are just a touch cooler: so nice for a sound sleep.
Superb composition with good clear colours and details.

What does the transition means? A caterpillar to a butterfly or a person one day left the office with some "Good bye" and suddenly found he had no obligations to this busy world. Standing in front of the mirror the person watches his grey hairs, white beards and scattered wrinkles... a transition.
