I have a 400 xti also and I think it is a great little camera. It's lighter than my other SLR but a lot heavier than my point and shoot. Then dealing with various lenses can get awkward. There are always trade offs. I think you will like it a lot. The only thing I miss with it is spot metering and the battery sure doesn't last very long. I think it is a very user-friendly camera. I'm glad you are happy with it.

This is a nice shot and blurred background is lovely. The wings and tail look a bit sharper than the head. I love how he is hanging onto that twig.

Congrats for your new equipment, seems you are really very happy and so you should be to have such a good toy.
This is a splendid shot with very impressive sharpness and nice colours. Superb lighting and it stands out well from the BG. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Horia,
Congratulations with your new toy. I am sure you will get the hang of it soon. Just read the manual and play with it as much as possible. Besides, plenty of people here to help you as well.
The result of one of your first photos is awesome. Super details and colors. You controlled the exposure perfectly and got a beautiful OOF BG.

Congratulations! Both - pictures and your new gear look great :-) I'm glad that finally you've got dSLR. Beautifull composition and POV. Excellent composition of colours of Dragonfly and BG. Eyes are slightly OOF but this is minor nit. Overall very good first attempt with 400D!

BTW - latin name of this insect could be easily used as a one of monster's name in Diablo 3 :-)

while reading your notes i felt if I was writing it, the same was my feeling when i upgraded to D80 from my fine pix camera but i know that you are also enjoying it like i did.

Salut Horia,

In sfarsit ti-ai realizat visul! ma bucur pentru tine! Cred ca stiu ce simti acum. Stiu cum e sa ai o camera noua si sa trebuiasca sa mergi la munca. Nu mai ai nici un chef. Cred ca de-abia astepti sa se termine programul la serviciu ca sa mergi acasa sa te mai joci putin :)

Trebuie sa-ti spun ca ai ales un subiect dificil pentru primele fotografii cu un SLR, cel putin din punctul de vedere al DOF -ului care cred ca este mult mai mic decat cel cu care erai obisnuit. Ai facut bine ca ai inchis diafragma dar trebuie sa stii ca la diafragme foarte mici fotografiile vor fi putin neclare din cauza difractiei luminii care este mai pronuntata. Vad ca in fotografia ta nu apare problema asta.
Compozitia este foarte buna, cu un spatiu liber bine distribuit si cu un fundal superb care scoate foarte bine in evidenta libelula. Culorile si contrastul sunt foarte bune iar expunerea excelenta.

Sunt curios daca tragi RAW-uri sau JPG. Lucrand cu RAW-uri o sa vezi ca o sa ai mai mare creativitate decat cu o camera compacta.
O imagine foarte buna pentru primele incercari. Nici nu ma asteptam sa fie altfel. Iti doresc s-o folosesti cu placere si sa iti aduca multe satisfactii.

Great news on the new equipment. Have fun playing and make sure that you take it off auto and start shooting in both RAW & Jpeg... Once you have the hang of the camera, you can come back to the RAW files (just use the jpegs for now) rather than wishing that you had taken some of those first pictures in RAW the way I am...

Great start and keep playing. Looking forward to much more to come.

The DSLRs have a much larger range of shooting options that compacts just don't have and I'm sure we'll be seeing some exceptional photos from you and your new kit...even more exceptional than your already exceptional 114 posts. :)

Hi Horia,
a great choice of DSLR too, i have the same and and i love it, now i have finally started to get to grips with it's functions! You have a lot of enjoyment ahead of you. i have found the battery life to be fine, one full charge lasted me nearly a week in Scotland!
Anyway, this is a great start, a fine composition and wonderful colour. Look forward to more from your new toy.

Hi Horia,
it's great to see you again and congrats to your your new "toys".
You start with a nice macro with pretty good sharpness.
You do not need F32 with your lens, the best aperture is
F8 to F11, more will decrease the sharpness because of the diffraction in digital DSRL and try to use a lower ISO. even it
the noise is under controll you will lose o alot of fine details.
The picture is well composed with good POV and nice colours.

It was lovely to hear from you again. Congratulations on the new camera. I have had my DSLR for almost a year now and I am still adjusting to it but I am glad I made the transition. This is an excellent shot for such a new camera. I can see that you will be taking world class shots with this is no time. Wonderful framing, exposure and POV.

Hi Horia,
Glad to see you've finally made the move up to DSLR mf.
It won't take long for you to get feel of the new equipment, you're a good study ;}
I would use at least a monopod in the field, to help insure sharpness.
You handled the exposure here perfectly.. Great colors, BG, POV, and good detail @ 1/125 as well.

Hello Horia,
Fine start with your new equipment with this good shot of a Sympetrum species. Even though you had a v. small aperture there was just a slight miss on the focusing point, that left the head slightly OOF. Otherwise in terms of composition, colour, BG, POV and pose it is an excellent capture.
Well done and I trust the USA tour is successful!

I do not now why I overlooked this image before.
My of all congratulations of new equipment (this fact was also overlooked by me I think).
The picture is really good, but I believe that the focus is kept in the middle part of this colourful dragonfly (not on its head unformtunatelly).
Nice composition and colours, bravo also for delicate BG and note :)
