Captured spring 2007 in Central Park, NY. I was really surprised how colorful this bird was with help of sunlight...

The Common Grackle, Quiscalus quiscula, is a large icterid.

The 32 cm long adult has a long dark bill, a pale yellowish eye and a long tail; its plumage is an iridescent black. The adult female is slightly smaller and less glossy.

The breeding habitat is open and semi-open areas across North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The nest is a well-concealed cup in dense trees (particularly pine) or shrubs, usually near water; sometimes, the Common Grackle will nest in cavities or in man-made structures. It often nests in colonies, some being quite large.

This bird is a permanent resident in much of its range. Northern birds migrate in flocks to the southeastern United States.

The Common Grackle forages on the ground, in shallow water or in shrubs; it will steal food from other birds. It is omnivorous, eating insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds and grain, even small birds.

This bird's song is particularly harsh, especially when these birds, in a flock, are calling.

The range of this bird expanded west as forests were cleared. In some areas, it is now considered a pest by farmers because of their large numbers and fondness for grain.

Hallo Ralf
Please to meet you .Excellent photography showing this birds multi coloured plumage in all its glory. A big splendor and poser indeed. Just look at the long tail and the graceful kind of walk. I just love the big white eye and the way the birds head is tilted slightly. An image well presented and worth a big smiley. A delight to look at. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Ralf

Indeed a very striking bird! The reflections for its glossy plumage are amazing and the spectrum of colors is very vast...really wonderful!
Very good POV from you to catch this exact angle for all these colors.
Also very nice sharpness on the bird as well as exposure management.
I think that the place here also works well in showing the colors of the Grackle's reflections, being simple and grey.
Very well done overall!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Ralf

Beautiful bird and very nicely captured....
It does seem to be slightly over sharpened as evidenced by the fringing around the beak/head and legs/feet

Hi Ralf,
They are indeed very colorful in the sunlight and you captured it in an admirable way! Those shining colors are breathtaking... Like I wrote many times before, those birds have much strange behavior when nesting. They clean their nest by making some fecal bags that they systematically through in the nearest water plan. Each spring, I have some of those birds, nesting all around the house and guess where they through them: in my pool! I hate this time of year :) Thanks,
Claudine
