May 6, 2002 Dark Eyed Junco

To Angelina Deans, my very first and longest and bestest TN Friend!

On the banks of the Kettle River, just before it re-enters British Columbia, there is a very small town called Curlew which is listed among the Ghost Towns of America now. Much of this comes with the consternation of the few remaining residents and the owner of the mercantile who does business there. And here on the western banks of the river, one day in Spring of 2002 I was carrying my Olympus 1.5 Megapixel Camera. And on the greening of the fresh buds coming into the bush and branches on the shoreline was this small Junco, perhaps awaiting my arrival in the early morning as I took some children into the school from our wilderness cabin.

If I were not reminded from time to time...of how lovely and wild the wilderness is, I would have become so cynical as to think the world is indeed ending soon. But this bird was certainly not think that. It was thinking about its next small prey perhaps or just resting with the gentle sound of a easy meltdown. The river flowing softly and slowly to the north, then turn back and to the south, then turn west into the mighty Pacific ocean...even you can hear it right now if you try...

It is indeed a big world...and it is filled with such tiny creatures... whose lives go on day by day until their time of which they do not know....much as the same as we do not know....but this we do know. The wilderness of this great world lives inside of us all. We yearn to learn. We wish to trek and we wish it always be so.....

The Dark-eyed Junco, also known as the Snow Bird, is the best-known species of Junco, a genus of small American Sparrows. Adults are generally gray on top with a white belly. The white outer tail feathers flash distinctively in flight. The bill is usually pinkish. The males tend to have darker, more conspicuous markings than the female. Juveniles often have pale streaks and may even be mistaken for a Vesper Sparrow until they acquire adult plumage at 2 to 3 months. There is a regional variation

Great image Bob,
Reminds me of those rare times when I've had the opportunity to sit alone in the woods far from civilization, and just listen, smell and view nature at it's best. TFS.

Hello Bob. This image is just wonderful for a dedication and I'm sure Angelina is thrilled with it. The loose wings on this plant is very graphical and the lone bird perching there is just stunning. Very pleasant crop and I like it. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Dear Bob,
Great capture against beautiful background. This photograph reminds me what I had clicked at Corbett National Park; refer link Turquoise Blue Bird.
