Hi Tom,
The subjects of this shot are fine.
They seem to be in focus if slightly dark.
The eye gets drawn to the bright areas on the left,so if the resolution of the image allows,it would be preferable to crop that area off altogether.
Without cropping the other side,this would place the coons in the left third of the photo,which follows the 'rule of thirds'.
In a compositon,its good to have the main subject about a third of the way across the image.This is because when we look at a picture our eyes are usually drawn most to those areas,and then the centre.
Centred shots are fine for some images,and would even work quite well with this one.
I might try a workshop for you (if the resolution is sufficient) and post it soon.

Hello Tom,

Well spotted during daylight hours. A good image, good detail although a little dark. I suspect that the bright sky to the left of the image has caused your camera's metering system to expose a little darker. I think for this image a portrait format would be better. The two Racoons one above the other, the elongated spot they're in all fit a portrait format. That would also eliminate the bright sky to the left. Also as they are looking down I would probably leave more room at the bottom of the frame than the top, simply because it's more pleasing to the human eye/mind if the subject has more space 'to look into' so to speak.

I read Steve's critique and I'm not sure he meant to say that distractions are officially bad :-) While people can and will offer different advice, you are the photographer and if you want to include a leafy foreground then go for it.

Very cute capture Tom! Racoons are very mischievous especially when young. The only other time they are seen in daytime hours is when they have rabies. Nice DOF, focus and lighting on these critters!
