|Goura cristata, the blue crested pigeon... Now, if|
someone thinks of a dove that is of up to 5 lbs and 30
inches in weight and length chances are everyone
imagines a freak of nature or a possible mutation from
a horror movie gone bad. Here is the surprise: size doesnt matter, its grace that does in this case...
If your eyes ever fell upon this
creature, its a guaranteed jaw drop, I was far more
fond of this bird than some birds of paradise.
Despise its considerable size, the Goura doves remain
an exotic sight comparable to the Great Mughals art,
true masterpieces of mother nature: a superbe hyacint
blue body with a majestuos crest dropping like a
Chinese feather fan and their eyes like two protuding
spherical crimson ruby gems. An elusive, endangered
and exotic bird the Gouras live in the deep jungles of
Irian Jaya and New Guinea and as one can easily
imagine they were prized targets for their meat mass
but mostly their fantastic plumage, from papuan
tribesmen to avid colonial explorers and hunters.
Few zoos in the worls can pride themselves in having
these magnificent birds in their possesion, one of
them being the Los Angeles Metropolitan Zoo, in who's
aviary I took these images.

Wow, Radu, most excellent photo! You did a great job shooting at the zoo; can't see the enclosure at all. This is a strange looking bird with weird red eyes...great capture!
This is a new bird to me Radu. What an amazing sight. I would love to see a full body shot. Have you got one? Thanks for the introduction!
