Rufous-winged Sparrow
(Aimophila carpalis)

This small sparrow is found on flat, dry grasslands that are host to thorn-scrub habitats from southern Arizona to northwestern Mexico. The species is shy and elusive and is difficult to see except when the male is singing from exposed perches.

slender sparrow with a gray face, rufous crown, and brown streak behind the eye. Fairly large-billed. Both sexes are brownish above with dark streaks; underparts are offwhite, unstreaked. Rusty patch on wings. Tail is relatively long and rounded.

Breeds in flat, dessert grasslands scattered with thorn-scrub including bunch grasses, mesquite, or cholla. This species is also found along washes with sandy bottoms and vegetated slopes. It is a year-round resident of south-central through southeastern Arizona south to the southeastern Sonora and central Sinaloa regions of Mexico. Although it continues to be fairly common, the species' limited geographic range puts it at risk.

Hello Jane,
a fine capture of a Rufous-winged Sparrow taken from a great frontal POV with fine sharpness and stands out well against the blue sky in this excellent composition. He seems to have an unusually long tail, or is it another one directly behind him?.
TFS this delightful image,

Hi Jane,
Wonderful shot of this Sparrow in a fine pose. The blue sky as BG and the green leaves have become so much a part of your photography and so special too - almost a genre I would say. Very neat and sharp image with superb light management. Excellent composition.

hello Jane

a POV like this one with a bird, i kno that it comes from you,
excellent shot with a superb sun light coming on the bird,
excellent sharpness, details, and contrast, TFS

Beautifully composed with excellent POV and detail Jane. The blue sky BG and the branch offer just the right supporting props to make the ovwerall image outstanding. Very well done. TFS the image as well as the informative notes... :)

Hello Jane,
There are several sparrow species from the genera Passer and Petronia here. Some of them very similar your sparrow. but it belongs to another genus, Aimophila.
As for your post, great for this beautiful sparrow. It gave great pose on top of green branch. Eyes contact, POV, sharp focus and lighting great and in your usual quality. Blue sky nicely composed it in BG. Thanks for sharing this beauty. well done.

It looks like a Texas-sized sparrow, not that there is such a thing..but it certainly isn't a Sparrow I have seen...this part of the family appears through your lens to be a tad if not more larger..and well caught in your azure skies!

Great shot Jane, of a sparrow that I'm not familiar with.
Very sharp image with nice natural colors. The tail of this sparrow seems very long compared to the ones we have around here. Your deep blue skies always makes me a little envious. TFS. Great notes!!

Hi Jane,

This is a stunner up against that perfect blue sky, wonderful detail in the plumage, nice eye catch, and really well framed and composed.

Cheers Rick :)

Hi Jane. I am amazed by your consistency in getting the spotless blue sky for your bird shots. Really well isolated image in very nice perch and excellent framing. Well done and TFS. Regards. Jusni

Hello Jaycee,

Even if you took this shot from above, this nice sparrow was gentle enough to lean its head toward you :-)

You did a great composition using that square frame.

The only thing is that appears to me obvious that you passed a noise reduction software (like Neat Image) on the feathers of the bird removing there a lot of details... Am I wrong???

Hello Jane,

Beautiful picture of this sparrow. I like its pose. It has a quite long tail. Good sharpness. Very good composition. Nice natural colours.
