It has been an interesting week. Some of the romantic charm of having a "White Christmas" has worn off in the face of ice and snow and power outages and lost internet connections, and being house bound with no TV, no computer, and no escape due to ice, snow and downed trees. There were some beautiful moments though. I briefly posted a different version (the wrong version) of this shot several days ago... I deleted it and instantly we lost power and this is the first opportunity to get back to TN.

This was taken on the first full day of winter soon after awakening to the results of an overnight snow storm and a following ice storm. Our sweet gum tree, still holding on to autumn's leaves, was further decorated by ice. I liked the way it outlined each leaf and twig. The following day however, this branch was gone along with much of the tree. Sweet Gums just snap when there is an ice storm. There are a lot of these trees in our neighborhood and it can sound like a war zone with tree branches snapping off on all sides of us.

I did like these red Christmas stars and hope they further brighten your day.

Happy Holidays to one and all!

Hi Evelynn

Isn't it amazing how dependent modern man (ok, woman too) has become of electricity. Our existence almost comes to a crashing halt when there is no power available. I know, we've had numerous "power sharing" outages (actually it was a daily 4 hours cut that continued for months) this past year due to the inadequacy of ESKOM (the South African energy supplier) to provide this much needed commodity.

These iced up red Christmas stars are rather unique. It has the right colours for the season, red and white, but it was very well seen and captured and absolutely appropriate for this seasons greetings.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. I am rather pushed for time this year so please pardon me for my short comment. It is more important that I want to thank you for the friendship you extended to me during this past 2008. Also, I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyous Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May this Christ-fest and the imminent 2009 bring you everything that is beautiful and admirable, provide all your needs with blissful abundance, present you with that which is edifying and inspiring, grant you blessed peace and harmony, and bestow upon you a myriad of worthwhile pleasures and breathtaking moments with close friends and dear family.

Me too! And it keeps coming and so I lack images to post...I have run out of ideas from my back door:-) good moment capture..

Hi Evelynn and Merry Christmas!

This is fantastic! I honestly see this on Christmas postcards...i'm not at all kidding or exaggerating. It's the best seasonal photo i've seen here this year!
The shape of the leaves here is impressive - some wonderful perfect stars, culminating with the lowest one which is most beautiful. The colors of the "stars" is amazing - a gorgeous and vivid red - and the fact that they have that fine frosting on then (and it's 100% natural) is simply surreal!

I hope you had a great Christmas together with your loved ones and i wish you only the best for the next year!

Cheers and TFS
Horia

hello Evelynn

I like the title you used for this capture of the icy branch of leaves, well presented to show the falling branch and color of ice vs the red leaves.

The bokeh effect is actually working to make the branch stand out for attention here, and the fact that the BG blur is green providing a good contrast too. Good work.

tfs, bill

hello Evelynn

very beautiful shot of these tree leafs that the frost
did an white contour and gives the stars effect, TFS

Happy Holiadys also for you

Hello Evelynn,
I think you like to play with colors amidst the power outages.
Star rating: more than five apparently..
TFS
Annick:-)

The contrast is lovely and the dark BG makes a super backdrop

Hi Evelynn,
I was wondering when the first photos from your winter outing would show up on TN. It seems you were ready for it, but PacfiCorp wasn't.
The frosted leaves look really wonderful. The red color contrast perfectly with the dark green BG. The white crust around it is very beautiful and makes them look like candy.
I've read all critiques very quickly and can't understand that nobody commented about the bottom section of the photo. The result of the cloning(?) is too obvious and should have been done with more care. Go in closer and use a softer brush.
TFS,
Niek

Killer shot, Evelynn. Great subject. Amazing colors. Really nice light to capture this, too. This is a stunner. I really like the bottom star best, so I hope you shot a cu of that one, too.
Happy New Year.

Hello Evelynn,
This is superb my friend, I like how you used the backlighting to illuminate the ice on the stars. With the red leaves and the green background this is a great Christmas posting. Thanks Evelynn.
Rick

Good photo, lovely contrast between the red leaves and dark background TFS

It was interesting for me living in a hot climate to read what happens to you when you have a snow storm.

Hello Evelynn!
This is one of the most beautiful picture Ive ever seen here on TN!Congrats!
Best regards, Ana

Hello Evelyn!

Great gallery. This one shot is extraordinary. Amazing flowers covered with snow or frost. Great contrasts between main theme and grey background.
