Other than being treacherous and damaging, freezing rain can also be quite beautiful as shown by this "crystal filigree" that formed on my Japanese maple tree. ( Yes, the photo is right side up)
........................................................................................................
Freezing rain develops as falling snow encounters a layer of warm air deep enough for the snow to completely melt and become rain. As the rain continues to fall, it passes through a thin layer of cold air just above the surface and cools to a temperature below freezing. However, the drops themselves do not freeze, a phenomena called supercooling (or forming "supercooled drops"). When the supercooled drops strike the frozen ground (power lines, or tree branches), they instantly freeze, forming a thin film of ice, hence freezing rain.

hello Evelynn

you are reason, freezing rain can also be quite beautiful
on the trees but i don't love the freezing rain,
for me (as human) and more for birds & wild animals
and their habitat, the snow is always better than
the freezing rain, i think specially for birds like
the grouse, they can go under the snow doing
tunnels but not with the freezing rain,

another beautiful shot (close-up) of the freezing rain
on the tree branches, with excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Hello Evelynn,
This looks like a close up of an elegant crystal chandelier. Beautifully done Evelynn.
Rick

Hi Evelynn,
first off, happy new year to you and yours!I like ma nature's artistry and this capture of yours shows well what a great artist she really is.This filigreed image has wonderful colour and the depth of field helps create a nice layered effect that serves this capture well.I like straight forward photos that show what the mood of the land is at the time of the capture and this photo does that very well. Thanks for showing what in my eyes is something that makes a statement about the time of year we live and that is done so very well.Very good note about the supercooling. Thanks for this view. Bob
