This little Hummingbird doesn't seem to mind that he had to dig through the ice to get his drink! He must be glad he has such a long beak!

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM MST THIS
EVENING ABOVE 3000 FEET.

A STRONG WINTER STORM SYSTEM CONTINUES TO MAKE ITS WAY THROUGH
ARIZONA THIS AFTERNOON. THE FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS STORM SYSTEM
PASSED THROUGH TUCSON THIS MORNING AND NOW EXTENDS ALONG A LINE
FROM NOGALES TO WILLCOX TO CLIFTON. SNOW LEVELS BEHIND THIS FRONT
ARE BETWEEN 2500 AND 3500 FEET. A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW HAS BEEN
OBSERVED BELOW 3000 FEET THROUGH MOST OF THE DAY. COLDER AIR
BEHIND THIS FRONT WILL ALLOW ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL ABOVE 3000 FEET
THIS EVENING. TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 5 INCHES ARE
EXPECTED BETWEEN 3000 AND 6000 FEET...WITH 4 TO 10 INCHES EXPECTED
ABOVE 6000 FEET.

We never got the 2-5 inches but the temperature was well below freezing. Not news in many places but it is in Tucson Arizona! I see it will be 70F on Tuesday! This was taken through the window - too cold for me to go out there.

Hello Jane,
I try to avoid taking and giving critiques of birds on feeders but this takes the cake!
An amazing shot to show that hummingbirds stay in S. Arizona because usually there is no snow and when it comes they have to make the most of it, like this female!
Excellent Jane!
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Cheers,
Ivan

hello Jane

you did an excellent close-up shot, as Nicholas write :
« The poor little humming bird must wonder whats happening. »
you get excellent details of the bird the feeder and the snow,

Hi Jane,
Lovely capture.POV,pose of bird and composition are wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

Hello Jane
It seems as though you have very unusual weather at the moment...This must be a real shock to the species that reside where you live and its so good to see that your feeders are still open for business at a time when they are needed.
Great capture and I dont think there are many pictures of Hummers in the snow about!
All the Best

Hello Jane,
Wow, how strange to see snow from your part of the world!! And then 70F to follow - very weird! What's happening to the planet! The poor Hummingbird must be totally confused! A great record to have and a very fine capture taken through a window.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Jane,
I fully agree with you about what you have given a title as "Where There's a Will There's a Way". The photograph is unique & tells about the hunger related survival application of the aquired skills of this small Hummingbird. TFS

Beautiful capture of this Hummingbird , good sharpnes details colours pov and bg ,tfs ,Greetings Siggi

Hi Jane
I feel for this little hummingbird, I know that they don't take the cold very well. To bad you couldn't give him warm sugar and water. I hope he manages the cold weather okay. Nice capture!

Hi gallery neighbour :)

It seems strange to see a hummingbird in the snow, he looks so small and vulnerable. Nice exposure, great POV and nicely sharp. Lovely winter scene

Hello Jane,
Una imágen muy peculiar de éste pequeño pájaro, buen ejemplo de las condiciones que tenemos en el hemisferio norte, también en Europa.

Hello Jane,
It's a bit crazy, a hummingbird in the snow. Something different in the desert. Although it's taken through the window, its a very good photo in beautiful colours and good sharpness.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Jane,

Jane,

Wow ! I saw a picture somewhere on the net of a hummingbird perched on a snow covered branch but the quality was so horrible I couldn't really make out what bird it was! Now this shot really proves it. I can't believe those little guys would actually want to endure the white stuff. Really impressive. I am sure people like you who take the effort to help them out are a life-line in tough times. Great work. Although I am not a big fan of bird pictures at feeders, this one really hits home. Very nice work.
Best wishes for the New Year Jane! Thanks for your comments.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hello Jane

Well it was sunny and 17C,65F today. But then the winds became really strong.
I certainly did not expect to see this from you there.
The poor little thing.
I pray it goes quickly so all the creatures who find it hard to cope can get back to normal.
A very good capture.

Hi Jane,

I thought Hummingbirds are tropically birds?
It looks it does'nt matter the cold.
Great shot of this little beauty in the snow while he tried to eat.

Great shot Jane,
I never thought I would see this kind of weather from your area of the US. I suppose your wildlife must be in total shock, especially when they woke up to this!!
The little hummer sure looks cold as she is getting her morning drink. Your right about the long beak, it comes in pretty handy at times like this!! Nicely done!!
Just to let you know, it was 65 here in Ohio yesterday, a new record for this time of year!!

Hello Jane,
Cold is relative, if your used to 70, then 30 is darn cold. What a tough little trooper, he'll need much more food to keep him warm so please make sure his feeder is full. Thanks for sharing this great image of the conditions in good old Tuscon. Stay warm my friend.
Rick

hello Jane

The bright red of the feeder stands out nicely in the white ice and the bird at the feeder is striking a pleasant view for a winter scene.

No OE on any part of the ice and the light control is great for this shot. Good work.

This must be one hungry Hummer! :-)
Great composition.
Nice and clear.

This kind of weather seems pretty unusual for sunny Arizona!

That's amazing! Poor little hummingbird. We had a freeze last year after the hummers started arriving. They did survive. Amazing.
Lovely shot and fascinating.
The snow is just insane!ha ha

Hi Jane.

Colorful image with good contrast and pristine details. The melting snow and the perch is just brilliant. Excellent top class shot and TFS.
