In some ways this post is like my last one, but in one way it is not. More California this time, more Aņo Nuevo, and more elephant seals. But the theme here is biology rather than aesthetics.

The seals have been on shore earlier in the year for other purposes such as birthing pups, but this time are back for molting. This is obviously very hard work. They seem to spend most of their time sleeping on the beach, scattered about like driftwood logs.

This group is an excellent demo of the molting process, hence the title- "scruffy or smooth?" Not much more to say than that- two are done and the other is obviously only about halfway. I wonder- how many scraps of molted fur make it into bird nests or rodent dens?

There is more info on Aņo Nuevo and e-seals in my previous post.

tech notes- major cropping, significant shadow/highlight adjustment and contrast boost, one step sharpening, slight increase in total saturation

Hello Bob! Wonderful scene. Don't worry, be happy! Well done!

Hi Bob,
I'm delighted to discover you as a colleague (I am a retired biology prof.) and your gallery. In this picture you were able to combine esthetics with biology, a mood is conveyed. And, funny thing for me, even on land these creatures maintain some of the elegance they exhibit in the water. Can you approach those big mammals just like that?

Best regards
