Bears at Brooks Falls, Alaska. The sow had left her two cubs sitting here on a small sand bar while she fished. The spot was well away from where the bulls were fishing, since bulls will kill cubs in order to force the sows into estrus.

She returned from time to time to check on the cubs and feed them scraps of salmon. I could see her approaching the cubs from the rear and anticipated that there would be a moment when the three faces were lined up perfectly.

The D3X has a slow frame rate, so it was important to time the shot to get the image I had already composed in my head. The very next frame shows the sow a full step ahead of the cubs.

The photo was shot from the viewing platform at the falls. No doubt Moose Peterson got almost the same shot; he was standing right behind me, but was using a 600mm lens on a D3X. I think at his angle, though, the small tree would be in front of the bears. He was more to my right.

The Park Service limits the time photographers may spend on the viewing platform. Although viewing the bears from the platform is safe and it does not disturb the bears, visiting photographers should be cautious in traveling the mile long trail to the platform. We encountered several bears in the vicinity and several photographers reported close encounters with wolves. Photographers should travel in groups and make noise as they walk in order to avoid surprising any dangerous critters.

What a great pose, it tells a sweet story..the twins are in twin pose and the mother looks toward them. They are obviously damp from the river that is visible in the BG. I also like that one cub has dark ears!
