[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While staying in the cabin at the Gahr Farm I read in a Portland informational magazine about the best beaches in Oregon. Since we were staying at the coast in the last leg of our vacation I was particular interested in what we could expect and find near Port Orford. One beach that really caught my mind was called Secret Beach.

Secret Beach is the unofficial name of a beach is located in the Boardman State Park and it directions to it are pretty vague. You need to find a very small parking spot near mile marker 345 on Highway 101. It is between Mill Creek and Miner Creek.

Eventually we found the parking spot and the trail to the beach. Arriving near the beach we noticed that there was a steep decline along the rocks to actually touch the sand. We decided not to descend because there was also a large family playing on this small beach. Instead I went up a cliff face to see what was hidden behind it. At the top I found this wonderful bay and I call it Secret Bay.

For this photo I used my 3.0 ND filter (10 stops) and made four different exposures with different shutter speeds so to treat the different light zones as good as possible. The shutter speeds were 20 secs, 30 secs, 60 secs and 120 secs. Back home I merged these exposures to one. For instants I used the 120 Secs. exposure for the foliage in the FG and the shadows in the rock. The 20 second exposure was used for the clouds. I guess I could have used one more exposure of more then 120 secs. since some parts still look dark.

Hello Niek,
This looks like paradise, I wonder if you managed to climb down and have a swim? I love the Pine trees climbing down the rockside and the rocky little island - a fantastic place altogether and very well captured here!!
TFS and best wishes for the New Year! Kind regards, Ulla

Bonjour Niek,
A wonderful sight on this hidden bay, which seems still very natural and shows an amazing mix of sea, rocks and forest. Ans what a beautiful point of view you have chosen. Very fine landscape picture in your subtle personal style.
Thanks and kind regards

Hello Niek,
Beautiful photo, great POV.

Looks like a beautiful mini-bay with a wonderful beach Niek, the trees and bushes in the FG provides the composition with great depth and the bright sky produces very nice shadows of the trees and rocky terrains. A perfect naturescape indeed!
TFS and cheers,

A superb image made from multi-exposures, Niek.
This is a difficult technique which you have handled very well in this composition.
The place itself is unique; I thought this kind of vegetation would be impossible by the seaside.
Thanks and wishing you a Happy New Year!

Hi Niek,
this place is like in paradise.
You had good luck to find it - and no people there, fantastic - so I'm right - it was in paradise ...

Hello Niek,
A perfectly composed image with wonderful detail, exposure and color. This looks like a fantastic spot to spend the entire day at. You were very fortunate to find it void of anyone else, especially after seeing how beautiful it is.
Thank you for sharing your Secret Bay with all of us!!

Hello Niek,

Wow Niek!
I'd like to be there right now!
I know a similar place in the south part in Brazil, but I wasn't able to capture that place like this one.
Your POV and technical management can show us the real view and we can almost touch this. Colours and volumes are also good.
TFS and see you in TN.
Best wishes,

I wish you a happy, healthy and successful new year 2010!

Wow Niek. This is wonderful! Aren't you proud of the progress you've made in photography? The blending of the four exposures is flawless. How did you do it?

Thanks for the directions to your secret bay. We just went past there but all was shrouded in fog!! Weather forecast said clear! I was so upset. I mean HEAVY fog for three days all along the coast. That is more a summer phenomenon. Oh well. We did get a bit of sun further south...and some neat photos of marine life (sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals, otters, egrets, cormorants etc). I still need some more seascapes for my slideshow and this image of yours is motivating.

Ulla's comment re: going for a swim made me smile. Did you stick a toe in that water? This far north the Pacific can be quite chilly... numbing actually. I'm not that tough.

TFS your super image and info.

Hi Niek

3 hours editting time! Eecks you are patient. I have to say that is much more than I am willing to spend on a picture, but I can see that this one would never have come off without it.

Great composition, exposures and patience and Best wishes for the New Year.

Hi Niek,
Good to connect with you again after a long absence.
Wow! What a beautiful spot.
The California and Oregon coasts are full of these "secret" beaches.
You captured this one beautifully, with a lovely composition.
Your technical notes went way over my head, but they sound very impressive.
I also enjoyed your website.
Take care and keep in touch.

Beautiful scene.Nice captured.
