Hello Everyone,
This Bald Eagle was perched on a tree branch over hanging the Gardner River near Mammoth watching for a fish to swim by.

Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

The bald eagle, US national symbol, resides in Yellowstone throughout the year, nesting in large trees close to water. Adult birds are easily recognized by their dark bodies, white head and tail feathers; their wing span may reach up to 7 feet depending on the individual. During severe winters, some pairs move to lower elevations where food is more available. On the wintering areas, resident eagles are joined by migrant bald and golden eagles. Bald eagles are often seen around Yellowstone Lake, where they prey on fish in the summer. They also commonly scavenge the carcasses of animals such as elk and bison that die in late fall to early spring. This is especially apparent on the Northern Range of the park.

A Bald Eagle Management Plan objective for the greater Yellowstone ecosystem is to have 62 breeding pairs produce an average of 53 young each year. In 1998, 15 eaglets fledged from 22 active nests in the park. We are currently surpassing our Bald Eagle Management Plan objectives.

In July 1995, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reviewed the status of the bald eagle and downlisted it from endangered to threatened in four of the five regions in the United States in which it is found. Even if removed from the endangered species list, eagles and their habitat will be monitored and protected in Yellowstone and elsewhere, as specified in the Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Hi Rick, wow what a superb subject and well executed shot of the iconic American Bald Eagle.I need to get a 600mm lens as well because I see eagles often but they are just to skittish to allow me to get very close to them, that is unless they are very young.I find nothing in this image that I can fault with in anyway or truly critique as it is so good as is.A very fine time of season shot of this noble bird and thanks for giving us this view of it.I hope that you never quit getting out there in our natural world to photo and just plain take in the scene.Your photos are very well liked and even loved by thousands of people.

Hello my friend!
Awesome capture of this majestic Bald Eagle. Your lens does an excellent job bringing such sharp detail and true colours, or perhaps it's the guy who is behind the lens ; ) I love the way he's perched on the tree which is just about to leaf out. The side view shows off his powerful beak and huge feet. Love it!

Hello Rick,
I see you got another lens, it's doing some great work for you. The eagle shot is super with lots of detail and beautiful colors. Love the blurred BG. as it helps you to focus on the main subject. Well done!!

Hi Rick,
Seems to have similar colours to the African Fish Eagle.Exceptionally sharp image and striking clarity.Limited DOF has created a two layered image hence majestically emphasising the subject.Very cleverly composed leaving the open space, well done and TFS.

amazing sharpness and composition, TFS Ori

Hi Rick,
it is not easy to capture this bird. It is not easy to have it done so nicely. i like your composition very much. The positioning is simply perfect. I remember the poem by Tennyson, Eagle....
It depicts the poem.
Lovely view and exciting presentation.

Rick, this is very high quality work of this magnificent beauty, showing its excellence in a fine pose with great composition.
TFS and have a nice Sunday MF!
