[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This speckled rock is called Santa Cruz mudstone and it can be found along the marine terrace at Natural Bridges State Beach and Preserve. Just a few feet from this rock formation, on the Monterey Formation, is the ocean. The San Andreas Fault runs along this area as well. So a combination of faults and water and erosion and the combination of minerals create this unusual speckled rock. The mineral limonite helps to create this colour in the rock. "Santa Cruz Mudstone consists of organic mudstone beds of upper Miocene geologic age", (www.ucsc.edu/geology)
The rock formations here are estimated to be about 7-9 million years old.
We were walking over this section of the rock to get to the tidepools over to the left of this area and the unique speckles and designs that are found here really caught my eye.

Hi Karen.
Nice piece of History. I like the note as well as a pleasant picture. Shapes of the rock, texture as well as warm colours are very nice. Vertical orientation of the shot is also suitable for the subject.

Hello Karen,
Beautiful piece of nature's abstract art. Very interesting indeed with influences from land, sea and atmosphere and with mobilisation probably due to the incluence of the nearby St Andreas fault zone. Abstract but meaningful. A real pleasure to view.

PS: Did you mean hematite instead of hellatite? I could not find information on the latter. Limonite is a mixture of hematite and goethite.
