Not sure how I got so lucky and close. Unfortunately I had a normal lens on, no long lens, however a heavy cropping didn't seem to bother the picture overall.

The male goldfinch is eating away, really paying little attention to me. When I say heavily cropped I really mean it. This is one small portion, maybe 1/16th of the whole image and that is somewhat surprising as it was a kit lens (*I dont think the camera is very smart as it thinks the focal length is 100mm and this lens doesn't go that lose even in conversion)... so we are dealing with an inexpensive lens and the wrong one for the shot which makes this capture pretty surprisingly good.

The little hungry bird is eating away at the bull thistle. I watched him for a good 5 minutes. Fascinating bird with wonderful colours..

EXIF info was left on the picture and here

hello Bob,
after a long time. was missing you. how are you now? this bird is really pretty. i hope i get to see this beauty some day. not even three months in your beautiful country, but seen almost three dozens of different birds and that being stuck at the same place! great na? :)
this photograph contains enough details, though strongly cropped as you say. the purple flowers are very suitable for the yellow bird. wish you had the proper lens with you at that time. it could be an excellent presentation then.
take care
have a nice weekend
Ruby

Hello Bob,
It is a pleasure to be neighboors with you today. I would never have guessed that this shot was so heavily cropped as it looks really good to me. I'm sure using a 200 ISO helped to retain the pixel count when you cropped.
I have always wanted to capture a shot of one of these little beauties feeding on a thistle like this, but so far it hasn't happened.
I never tire of watching these tiny golden gems, as a matter of fact we had seven males at our feeder today.

Hello Bob,

They come in droves to feed on the knapweed in my backfield .... can't get near the things though as they always have a sentinel perched up high.

Love this composition showing the details of this species in it's preferred kitchen. Crisp, colorful & literally from a bird's eye POV!

Two thumbs up from the Third Mackenzie Bro of the Great White North on this fine image.

Regards,

Derek

Hello Bob,
Back from some holidays I just discover this lovely and enchanting picture. You have been lucky, indeed. And what a fine color-combination yellow and purple. I also like your chosen tight horizontal framing.
Well done!
Kind regards
Anne
