[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have been trying to capture a photograph of a Red-bellied Woodpecker for the past two years. I was sitting out back hoping to get a shot of anything interesting when this bird landed on the back side of a tree next to me. I swung the camera around and focused on a spot I thought it might appear and sure enough, it's head came into view. It took a few seconds before it came all the way around the tree and gave me some really good shots. I was thrilled to say the least!!!

The Red-bellied Woodpecker is such a pretty bird with it's narrow black and white barred wings and back, buffy brown chest and head with orangish yellow nap, and a reddish orange stripe on it's head. Females have less of a red stripe then the males. Even though it is called a Red-bellied Woodpecker, the red on it's belly is not easily distinguishable.

I have occasionally spotted these birds searching for insects on the trees behind the house, but they seem to be very skittish and never stayed long enough for me to get my camera. I believe this is a female, because the red doesn't extend all the way down over the top of it's head.

I have this guy here, watched a family of them yesterday in the same tree!

I've never ever had the bounty to register a Woodpecker the way a lot of the folk have done; and, that includes your person.
Your notes are always EDUCATIVE!!!
Such details ... how do you do it? A sharp image ...

Hello Ron

Excellent close-up photo of this Hello Marius
in its typical woodpecker pose, fine POV,
great focus, sharpness, details, and contrast, TFS

Sharp clear shot Ron. You managed a spectacular close view here. I can almost feel the detail in the under belly feathers. It's a perfect shot in every way. I can't help but wonder if your DOF was different, would it be nice to see a bit of the background. Of course that is always preference. You framed this nicely as well. Good colours in great focus. Just a perfect shot. Trevor
