I was out back walking along the edge of the woods when I noticed what appeared to be a dead leaf clinging to the stem of a plant. I thought I spotted a little movement, so I bent down to get a closer look.

I was amazed to see my first Question Mark Butterfly of the season clinging tightly to this plant. The butterfly was perfectly still and looked exactly like a dead leaf. I have seen Question Mark butterflies before, but they were always in the open wing pose.

I was careful not to disturb it as I moved in for a shot. I took a few photos and left it as it was. This to me is an example of perfect camouflage ability.

Hello Ron,
Very good picture of this remarkable butterfly. Sharpness is OK. Fresh natural colours. Good job.
Regards Sigi

Have seen a Question Mark butterfly on TN after a long time, Ron. Your story about it makes the capture much more interesting!
The typical mark is clearly visible on the wing. The appearance resembling a dead leaf is also discernible.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ron,
What a wonderful macro image....Outstanding clarity and focus. A very interesting specie.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Ron,

Beautiful species.... Just saw a Coma butterfly which has "C" mark, and now here "?" mark! Well captured if we talk on its details, sharpness or color. The busy surrounding wasn't n your hand, so we can take it as a natural habitat picture.
Thanks for sharing,

hallo Ron

Hi Ron,

you made this colorless butterfly really stand out in the green environment, and this without a flash. Good job, my compliments. Thanks for your comment on my similarly colorless dragonfly picture.
Best regards, Dietrich

Hello Ron
yes, we have posred a similar specie, first i thinked it was the same, but with a better look, i see the point near the C, it looks realy like a dead leaf from this POV, great details and superb environment
Have a good night
