[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was out pruning blackberry bushes when I spotted this praying mantis sitting among the branches. It was getting dark so I headed for the house to grab my camera.

I had to use flash since the light was fading fast and decided to set my aperture at f20 to get as much DOF as I could. The combination of the tight aperture, fast shutter speed and use of flash made the BG appear pitch black.

The mantis was cleaning its antenna when I made the shot.

Ciao Ron, fantastic portrait of praying mantis, lovely contrast against dark BG, wonderful natural colors, fine details, excellent sharpness and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Ron,
When I look to this specimen I am glad that I am not a small insect......Mantis are fantastic predators even with they own species....I meet once a female mantis eating his mating partner after they mate....
Outstanding clarity and focus.

Hello Ron
This is a masterpiece my Friend! Great light management and the F/20 makes the difference.Impressive sharpness, amazing colors and contrast with the dark BG.Congrats!
Have a good day!

A typically brilliantly clear, sharp, well lit shot we have grown to expect from you Ron. Absolutely beautiful view of this gorgeous insect. Using the flash gave you a wonderful lighting on the insect while, as you say in your note, rendering the background black and non-intrusive.

Hello Ron,
Excellent BG.
Green looks nice against dark BG. Perfect focus on its eye. Well details and POV with well light on subject.
Thanks for sharing,
Regards and have a nice WE,

Hi Ron,
Awesome photo. The combination of tight aperture and flash always pays off, you've got great DoF and proper exposure on the mantis, but entirely black background. Excellent contrast due to the above, great sharpness and clarity. Superb masterpiece, hats off for you!
Kind regards from Ireland, László
