Cathartyes aura – Turkey vulture, juvenile

Can be spotted relatively easy in southern California,
he is the most common carryon eater, scavenger and
opportunistic feeder.
Some of the postures you find them in are quite
disturbing, half buried in rotting carcasses
scavenging on their putrid guts and organs.
Still no animal is ugly or useless, especially the
later in case of this one... he is a cleaner of what
otherwise may bring disease or rot in sight.
Well, not anymore with this macabre but comical bird.
I like them, however they are not condor pretty that’s
for sure, specially as juveniles when their
head is gray and their feeding movements are shy and
clumsy. With age they start to feed like true vultures
and change the color of their head to crimson red
and there is a passage from cumbersome to majestic.

Great POV of this vulture with sharp details. I don't think I have seen a juvenile of them before. Thanks for the post and for the note. : )

Radu, I like this shot very crisp and clear, but a little to tight a crop for me. Did you shoot him this close or crop? Good shot of his head though and a great background.

Sad face and eye of this nice bird Radu. Good POV and composition. Hey, I like vultures very much too, and, from my deepest childhood and first visit in ZOO, I think they're not bad but condors are best :-)

Nice shot Radu,
The framing is quite tight and it's hard to say the colours are amazing, but the photo has something interesting in it.
I like it.

Have a great Christmas and a happy New Year!

A powerful view of this bird - the hunched shoulder createsa avery strong image. Well exposed and sharp, showing lots of detail.

Great detail on an unusual POV of the subject. Very different. Well Done.

nu stiu cata vreme mai am maine sa dau o raita pe TN, asa ca profit de ocazie sa-ti urez Craciun Fericit si sa-ti multumesc pt. sfaturi, comentarii si sustinerea oferita in acest an. Si nu in ultimul rand de pozele din locuri pe care eu voi avea putine sanse in viata sa le vad cu ochii mei.

Salut, Petru
