Silver Falls Park is part of the western Oregon rain forest. The weather has been clear with no preciptation for days. A sudden drop in temperature has resulted in the deep canyon walls being covered with icicles made from the seeping water from the saturated soil. We call these icicles " The Swords of Damocles" because as the day warms huge swords of ice many feet long can break off. So far they have only landed at our feet...however that is close enough. Now we carry bicycle helmets to wear when passing beneath them and visit the park early on these few icy days!!

I wrestled with myself over posting a photo with stairs in it, but of all the shots I took this was the one that best illustrated the scale of the ice wall.

This type of photo was popular today. I think it would be just as appropriate for trekearth. This is not something most people get to see. The weather has been very bizarra where I am lately too.
Nice greens here and great POV.
Be careful,

Hi Evelynn
Very interesting phenomenon and well captured. I'm just slightly concerned for the day that it will hit somebody as a bicycle helmet would probably not give you sufficient protection.
The composition and POF are good, DOF and focus were well handled, exposure (IMO) might be a little dark, but the reality is such that should you have increased the brightness you probably would have lost the icicles through burnout.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Evelynn,

Great Photo, interesting note. Colors and POV are great. I'm just wondering were the stairs lead to. It looks like they go past the iciles into a cave.
TFS, Niek

Nice, difficult to shoot and maintain good exposure, well done indeed!

Amazing, one of the coolest shots ever

A fascinating phenomenon you have portrayed here, Evelynn. There is something very disturbing about these "swords" hanging right over the stairs. A very unusual sight that you have captured skillfully. TFS. : )

This is so beautiful, I love that you've included the "dangerous" stairs too. They really add drama to the shot, well done.

Would those stairs lead into a cave of sorts?
It may be dark; I agree. But, it is a GREAT photo.
Thanks for sharing this piece of your life with us.
Well composed, beautifully frammed, & the presentation
along with the notes are just fine.
Best regards,
