Hello Friends,
This is my 1st Hummingbird Hawk-moth photo here on TN :)
Last summer I tried so hard to capture this cool moth here in Willowbrook,IL with using 3 different camera and 4 different telephoto lenses but couldn't capture not one good one to post here but this year i spent $639 and bought new Canon 70-300 IS telephoto lens and here it is:)
I saw this moth last week 2 days in row and captured as much as I could because I don't wanna wait another year to capture it:)
They were 4 of them and 2 has different colors than others.Almost like dull brown color unlike vivid reddish color like this one on this photo..
I hope you like it:)
Cheers,
Chris

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a species of hawk moth with a long proboscis, and is capable of hovering in place, making an audible humming noise. These two features make it look remarkably like a hummingbird when it feeds on flowers. The forewings are brown and the hindwings are orange. The wingspan is 50-58 mm.

Adults may be encountered at any time of the year, especially in the south of the range and two or more broods are produced each year. They fly during the day, especially in bright sunshine. The larva is green with two stripes along the sides and the horn at the rear end typical of sphingids. It usually feeds on bedstraws and madders but has been recorded on other plants including Aster, Centaurea, Petunia, Phlox, Sage and various thistles.

The species is distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere but is resident only in warmer climates. It is strongly migratory and can be found virtually anywhere in the hemisphere in the summer. However it rarely survives the winter in northern latitudes (e.g. north of the Alps in Europe).

so, the 639 bucks were a good investment. *g*
not even, that it is your first hawk-moth, chris,
you captured it in flight, amazing, perfect,
superb focus on the moth, nice blurry wing-motion
and a terrific composition with the beautiful flower as a "fueling station".
well seen & done, thorsten.

Very good photo of this moth Chris!
Quite dificult to take on fly!
Very good DOF and details!
I think it is not a Macroglossum stellatarum but some kind of Hemaris.
M. stellatarum is more grey and not so colourfull as we can see on your photo.
Take a look at:
Macroglossum stellatarum

Hello Chris,
Wonderful in flight capture.POV,colors, sharpness and composition are excellent.
TFS...:-)

Excellent capture, Chris!!! That moth is amazing and beautiful!!! And the fact that you caught it in flight is very impressive! The nice and lovely green bg enhanced so much the insect and the flower! You also got a great pov (not easy to guess!) and did a remarkable composition! The only little thing (if I should say one) is that the flower looks a little bit OE. But that removes nothing about this incredible and fantastic picture!!! Excellent work and TFS,

Michel

Your shot is great. Details and sharpness of the moth are outstanding, BG is colourful and amazing. Composition is excellent. Bravo.

Hi Chris,
A superb shot on the Hummingbird Hawk-moth. You nailed this one! Beautiful colors and sharp detail. Just the right amount of wing blur with the rest frozen very well in sharp detail. Beautiful OOF green backround sets it up well.
Scott

Hi Chris,
why have I missed this one?!? It's beautiful.
This moths are so impressive, I like them so much. Now we have autumn here in Germany, not many chances to see them again in 2006 ;-(
But I will spend the next week in Italy - keep your fingers crossed for me for some warm and sunny days. Bye

Hi Chris,

Excellent photo! I have been taking a few photos of these too, haven't got one that I'm completely happy with yet, but I'll keep trying.

By the way, we have Snowberry Clearwings in the Chicago area too, maybe that's the other ones that you saw.

Thanks,
John
