California Alligator Lizard, Elgaria coerulea.
We saw this aligator lizard while hiking in Helen Putnam Regional Park in Petaluma, CA. I believe this is the Southern variety. The lizards are fairly common in this area of California.
The yellow of his eyes is apparently how to distinguish southern from northern. His tail was short, which is more typical of a northern'er, however, so who knows.
I don't remember his length, but I'm thinking about 12-18".
I was happy to get the sun and the shadows in this shot. It has been sharpened and saturation was increased. |

TFS, nice t see this critter, these long animals are a pain to photograph, I never know where to "cut them off" or how to dispay them best.
I like the diagonal here, you also have good detail on the scales and the colour of this critter.
AS for owls, Yes, it is NOT nice the way they are always in "hiding" when we want to get at them.
