Todays post is dedicated to my best friend and fellow TN member Scott Hale. (He turns 40 today) We go on alot of photo shoots together, and we have a great time even if we don't get any good photos. I asked him to go with me on a late afternoon shoot at the local nature center, but he was still working off his list of chores, so he declined.

Well he missed a chance at the biggest Mantid I have ever personally laid eyes on. This Monster Mantid was a good 8 inches long without using his antenne. For the rest of the world that uses metric, that would be 20.32 cm. in length. I had a limited area to work, and could not even get a full body shot. When I first noticed him he was hanging upside down under some Milkweed Flowers munching on a Monarch Butterfly.(Very cool photos) I was very tempted to capture it and take it home, but all I took were photos.

Everyone pretty much knows about Mantids. There are over 1800 speicies world wide, and over 20 species are found in North America alone.

Mantids are most commonly seen in late September and early October either resting on a plant or "fluttering" through the air, sometimes mistaken for a hummingbird. Some appear to resemble leaves or flowers in shape and color.

The common name comes from the manner in which they hold up the forepart of the body, with its enormous front legs, as though in an attitude of prayer. They might also be called "preying mantes" for they are carnivorous, eating other insects. The body is elongate with the front legs modified into prominent grasping organs that catch and hold prey. The wings are well developed, but mantids commonly remain quiet in one place until another insect comes into reach. However, they sometimes cautiously stalk their prey.

Hello Scott!
Last Sunday I had a chance to see a large mantid. Even though it looked impressively large, it couldn't have been half the size of this guy. I like the head of the insect turned towards the camera, the composition, sharpness and tight framing. Congratulations,

I've got no words for this pefect macro work!
Great composition, DOF and POV.
Very well done.
Thanks for sharing.
My best regards,

Excellent detail, DOF, POV, exposure, and natural colors.
I like the way you've framed this and the extra detail of the leafs underside so well seen. PT
