This was the first time I ever saw a praying mantis. Actually there was a total of five altogether. Looks like we had something in common, since they liked the same kind of flower I did. Then, all of a sudden, one of the motionless insects caught a poor bee and ate it within the matter of minutes. I had 1.4x extender put behind the Tamron 180mm macro, so I couldn't get much of DOF, but I was too excited to think about taking the converter off. Also, just before this one I was taking shots of entire insect from a larger distance and forgot that F9.0 was not small enough for a closeup like this. I cropped the image just below 15% on the left and the bottom to improve the composition. ISO400, 1/125s, flash, tripod. Sharpened in Picture It!9 and noise removed in Neat Image.

Hi Mark,
Awesome action shot. I have one munching on a Monarch butterfly. Sharp at the heart of the action with a pleasing gradual falloff int the DOF.
Great colors! Well done, I love it!
Scott

Saludos... Ricardo

It impresses of only to see the scene Mark... can I ask to that it distances did you capture this image?.
Excellent macro with great clarity, although I coincide with your narration that F9 was not enough in this case.
Perfect background and POV that it even dramatizes more the presentation.
Regards... Ricardo

Hi Mark

This is a splendid macro! Great details acheived here! I also have a couple of shots of a Mantis eating a spider, do i know what you mean by devouring fast :)
Anyway, the shot is fantastic, the POV is excellent, the flash managed very well and the DOF very good (i don't think you neaded more:)).
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

You're too modest. The outcome is just perfect. Very detailed. Light is perfect. Action is very well shown.

Hello Mark,
This is first class picture. My first time to see such action up close. Very well done and TFS.
JC

Mark,
Even with converter you still have enough DOF, IMO!
Colour and details are very well done...
I think you did a good job in NeatImage.
Compo is a bit puzzled but not bad. It is a bit searching here;-)...
Well done. Special image...

Hallo Mark,
well documented scene with the focus just on the 'right place'. Colours of insects appear natural. Well selected cut-away. I feel that you would like to have achieved a little grater depth of field and sharpness. But, nevertheless it is a remarkable picture.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Mark, impressive details in this macro!
Good frame and management.

Fantastic image that records the moment of reckoning for a bee in the most graphic details. You have created a masterpiece here, Mark. I have never seen that much of clarity in a macro picture of this magnitude ever before.
You deserve to be congratulated for creating this image.
Thanks for sharing it.

Hello Mark,

Hello Mark,
This is a brilliant and dramatic close-up macro of insect eating insect. The closer it is, the more limited the DOF!

Wow Mark, this one is superb! Both the moment you captured and technical conditions of the photo! But this scene should be NC-17 for strong graphic violence:-) i like that pink-red mixing on the bg! Superb shot!
Thank you!

Hola Mark.-Exelente foto, mucho detalle y en el momento ideal. Muy nitida y clara.
Saludos Luis52.

this is just amazing and freaky at the same time. I do not want to be in that situation!
Super macro and good sharpness on the center focus. Wonderful details and PP Work.
I once saw a lizard catch a dragonfly but didn't get to snap any pictures because it was too fast and ran away into hiding as soon as it saw me.
Ok the more i see the bee being eaten like that, the more i feel sick... oh boy.
GOOD JOB!

What a dramatic shot you captured here!!! The poor bee cannot do anything against that super-predator! Excellent close-up with great pov and bg. Your mantis looks a little like "Alien"... Great job and TFS,
