Fox Sparrow
Passerella iliaca

Bruant fauve (French)
Chingolo zorruno (Spanish)

A large, boldly striped sparrow of scrubby boreal forest and mountain chaparral, the Fox Sparrow is most familiar as a migrant or wintering bird. Its vigorous "double-scratching," kicking backward in ground litter with both feet to uncover food, often draws attention to its presence under a bird feeder.

Description
Large sparrow, small songbird.
Heavily streaked chest.
Rusty tail.
Messy spot in center of chest.

Sex Differences
Sexes look alike.

Sound
Song a series of clear musical notes and sliding whistles.

Cool Facts

The Fox Sparrow comes in four different forms, sometimes considered separate species. The red or eastern form has reddish streaks on chest and back, a rufous cap, and a gray face. It breeds across the boreal forest and winters in the southeastern United States. The sooty form is dark brown all over. It breeds along the Pacific Coast from the Olympic Peninsula northward to the Aleutian Islands, and winters from Alaska to California. The slate-colored form has a gray back and reddish wings, as well as a longer, reddish tail. It breeds from central British Columbia to Nevada and Colorado, and winters in the arid Southwest. The large-billed form has a gray back, reddish wings and tail, and a very thick bill. It breeds from central Oregon southward through California, and winters in California.

Hi Manyee.
What an amazing portrait of the cute sparrow. I like your close-up picture so much. Its rich colour palette, great details and sharpness, beauty of the BG and composition are simply perfect. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Manyee,
Very nice portrait of the fox sparrow, the light, colors, focus, and the BG is very good. I like it a lot when the texture of the feathers are so crisp and detailed. The only thing is I think you applied the burn tool on the overexposed part of the beak alot, it is visible in gray, maybe you could have tried the clone brush instead. TFS

Amazing details of the plumage.
Intersting note.
Good light and natural colors.

Hi Manyee

Another fantastic capture of you and you little S3!
I really have no idea how you got so close to it, but it's outstanding!
The close-up here on this beautiful fox sparrow is exceptional and the details on the eye, beak and feathers are brilliant!
Further more, the exposure is greatly handeled, the colors are most charming and the catchlight in the eye is the cherry on top of the cake.
The side POV is excellent and the DOF work terrificly well, blurring the BG very nicely.
All-in-all a 5* post!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

Hello Manyee,

What an excellent portrait of a bird! You composited the picture very good by placing the subject off the center of the frame and leaving some space for the sparrow to look into. Also I like the way you ballanced the space taken by the bird with the empty space around it. The OOF background is a big plus for this close-up which guarantees for a perfect isolation of the subject. Great eye contact as well! The colors are rich and well saturated and also kind of complementary which is a positive aspect of this photo. It's useless to speak about sharpness since I was tempted to count the feathers and tiny hairs :) Joke aside, you've done a great camera work to show us these beautiful details. Exposure is also OK but there are some shadows a bit underexposed, due to PP I think. Contrast is also very good and focus was achieved with great accuracy. I also noted the excellent catchlights in the sparrow's eye! The usefull information about this species is also a big asset for your posting. Outstanding work of art overall! Congratulations and TFS!

Warmest Regards,
Eddie

Hi ManYee

Thanks for introducing me to yet another sparrow species and what a stunner it is. It is such a lovely close-up shot that displays the bird in a massive monster size on my monitor.

Of course there are no nits to be picked as this photo is technically superb. The capture and PP preparations were executed to the T. The portrait is displayed in a perfect composition even with a beautiful little catch-light in the eye, the colours are brilliant and well saturated, and the details are totally stunning. The lovely coloured, OOF, and well removed BG absolutely compliments the subject, and the exposure was masterful.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
