This is another shot from the Missouri Botanical Gardens Butterfly House. The butterfly is the very popular Postman Butterfly ( Heliconius erato petiverana) which has been documented on this site many times very well. I like this shot for the flower I caught him on.(One of my favorites) I thought this made a really nice overall composition. The flower is an Anthurium.

Most Anthurium species are native to tropical rain forests and are primarily epiphytic in nature.

Commercially, Anthuriums are grown throughout the world with the heaviest concentrations in the United States (Florida) and The Netherlands.

Anthuriums have been cultivated for many decades for cut flower production. Since the mid 1980's, Anthurium's popularity as a flowering pot plant has increased dramatically and has become a popular addition to many foliage growers' product lines.

Driving down to Ft. Myers Florida for a week, so I am hoping to get about 5 days of real wildlife and nature photography in. Suppose to be 75-80 degrees and sunny! I will try to find a wireless connection for my laptop to get my TrekNature fix.

Thanks fot looking,
Scott

Hello Scott,
Brilliant to catch the butterfly in such a splendid pose on this matching flower! Great sharpness and lovely colours. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Scotts,
u have captured a fine example of camoflage, the butterflies aligh their body patterns with that of the
surroundings to male it more effective.
mostly the whole of the insect world processed images in patterns.
though i thought this one a bit too tricky for the butterfly as the horizontal line on it wings is perpendicular to the white stamen(?).
and of course is exposed and composed well.

Hi Scott.
I in delight from your choice of pictured subject and skillfulness of its execution. Perfect reproduction of the petal's texture, smallest details of the flower and butterfly. Richness and clearness of the colours amaze the imagination. BG, excellently shadowed and coloured, is very impressive and highlights the beauty of the main subject. Superb work. My compliments and TFS.

Hello Scott,
Whether it was chance happening or the result of your infinite patience, this shot is THE IDEAL incarnate so far as my perception of it is concerned. In other words, I cannot think of any other situation better than this. The beautiful Postman butterfly is perched right at the center of the exotic flower in its most glorious aspect. The rest is the outcome of your talent as a photo artist.
To sum up, this is THE BEST composition I have seen so far on TN.
Thank you very much for sharing this great image.
Best regards,
Ram

Scott,
Won't this be a relaxing breath of fresh air to get some authentic nature shots? I remember how you were so energized by your last trip that I am VERY excited for you. You must keep in touch.
I like this Postman shot, it seems kind of symbolic that he is heading to the top(presumably North) and your going South to Florida!
The composition is what catches my eye first here, the outline of his wings mimicking the shape of the leaf also draws my attention..
Well done buddy, send me some pics from FLA, I am looking forward to them!
Scott

Hi Scott,
Good image, I like the definiton and details on it, the very strange flower (I have no idea about it existence)and the beauty butterfly. Only I found that in this pic BG not helps to you.Dispite this last, interesting image.
Best regards

Hi Scott and sorry for the delay

This is a splendid capture - both as an insect and as a flower, too.
The colors here areoutstanding and the focus is exceptional - showing very good clear details on this lovely Postman.
I really like the composition here a lot, as well - enhanced by the small similarity between the colors here - red flower on dark BG and red spot on black wing on the butterfly :)
Wonderful work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Scott, this butterfly shooting isn't as easy as it looks, is it? I was at a b'fly house y'day and the heat and perspitation takes a bit of getting used to. Also I couldn't see too well either!!
So I say "Well done" here with your postman on the Anthurium. It's a pretty fellow and I can see how it was named with the long white colours. TFS

Hi Scott

Lovely array of colours in this shot. The Postman looks great horizontally placed on the white of the lily. Very good compo. Nice camera work as always Scott. :-)

Hi Scott

Sorry I'm a bit late with this update, but the rat-race really had me in a strangle hold.

A true study in dualism. Two similar objects yet distinct opposing aspects as far as colour selection are concerned. It is a great shot running high on the visual impact rating. That attractive anthurium and its delicate visitor are both stunningly beautiful.

A fabulous composition with perhaps one small nit, which normally would have been an added bonus, but the dark BG unfortunately, makes some parts of the butterfly to disappear. It would have been great if you could have had some strategically placed green leaves right behind the insect. Anyway, the colours are splendid, the details are remarkable, and the exposure was perfect. This is especially noticeable in the white stamen which captured some amazing details and contrasts.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Scott,
Beautiful flower and butterfly,
Excellent compo,
Dark background and colors are perfect,
TFS

This has a very nice exposure and shows very natural colors. I like how the angle of the butterfly's open wings match the pedals of the anthurium as if there is some symbiotic relation between the two organisms besides the BF getting its pollen fix.

Hi Scott

C'est une belle et intéressante composition photographique pour ce superbe papillon. Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté grâce à la profondeur de champ qui est bien maitrisée.
Merci et au revoir...JP
