CJ's Desert Dwellers: Round-tailed Ground Squirrel Spermophilus teriticaudus

Order: Rodentia
Family: Sciuridae
Length:15-20 cm (6-8 in)
Weight:170-200 g ( 6-7 oz)

Local (Spanish) name: juancito

This squirrel is often mistaken for a tiny prairie dog. While they share some common habits (live in social groups), the two are not related.

The Round-tailed Ground Squirrel Spermophilus teriticaudus feeds on grass seed, cacti, or any green vegetation it can forage. They don't venture too far from their burrows, if there is adequate forage nearby.

Round-tailed Ground Squirrels Spermophilus teriticaudus live in small colonies and hibernate through the winter months. They produce a litter of 6 or 7 young in March or April.

Pictured is 'Mom' Squirrel. She is quite gregarious and will run over my toes to get attention and a hand-out of seed. She just re-emerged from hibernation and was a bit thinner than this photo depicts. They often stand on their hind legs to scan the area for predators.

Great squirrel shot. Very sharp. The dept of field looks quite shallow though with F6.4...
But I think that is a good thing.

A very sharp image.Realy great shot.congratulations

great shot - it really shows how well camoflagued they actaually are and I love the way she is slightly twisted into the shot. Great DOF and sharpness.
