Cecropia IV:
Larval molt of the Cecropia caterpillar (Saturniidae: Hyalophora cecropia) raised in a cage in Bryan/Texas. See also workshop!

The old cuticle has been shed like a shirt and it remains attached to the stick by the abdominal legs. The new cuticle had been synthesized before the molt underneath the old one.

The cuticle is synthesized by an unicellular epidermis. The same epidermis forms different cuticular patterns for each larval stage (see earlier slide Cecropia II). At about the same time that a surge of molting hormone triggers the molt another agent, the Juvenile hormone, is present and forces the epidermis to produce larval cuticle and not a pupal one ! Tomorrow I will post a metamorphic molt of Cecropia.

The (old) slide was scanned, the background had to be desaturated, the pic was cropped, colour-temperature adjusted and slightly sharpened.

Hallo Dieter,
Jetzt hat sie sich ausgeszogen und sieht sehr frisch und unternehmungslustig aus. Irgendwie wie aus einer Kindergeschichte..
Gut komponiertes und von den Farben her schönes Bild.
Liebe Grüsse
Anne

Hello Dietrich,
Very interesting to see the development of this larva. This one has a really peculiar shape. Nice sharp details and a good illustration. Would have been even better if it had been evenly lit. It is hard to make out the colours on the left half. Even so it is a very nice composition.
