The Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor) is the smallest of all the penguins and stands only 45cm tall. They are fairly common along the southern coast of Australia from Sydney to Perth and also occur in the New Zealand region. They are active mostly through the day and can swim vast distances from shore, before returning after dusk to go to their burrows that are dug out in the dunes behind the beach. At some places, like Phillip Island in Victoria, the return from the sea has been made into an organised tourist attraction where you can go and watch the penguins return from the sea and waddle up the beach to the burrows. One can only wonder what the penguins are thinking as the shuffle past hordes of humans standing behind fences going oooh and arhhh.
It is also possible to see these penguins in the wild as they regularly visit harbours and rocky headlands where the prey on shoals of small fishes behind the surf zone. When they come to the surface they yap like a dog, calling between each other.

These ones were taken at Featherdale Wildlife Park in Western Sydney where they have quite a good display of about ten individuals. I like this shot as it shows them both on land and swimming.
Thanks for looking.

Australia and NZ are very good place to find cute animals, I think. Good composition with one penguin standing in funny pose and other swimming in BG. Interesting note also. Good work Chris!

Chris, excellent sharpness. I've never seen a penguin; thanks for sharing.

A cute and lovely shot. The oof penguin on the bg is a nice "bonus".

I like the exposure. I guess it would be easy spoil it on the white shades of the bird.

Nice image, might benefit from a touch more saturation and a little play in "levels", but thats down to personal taste. Still well worth a smilie.

Hey Chris....I came home the other night after kayaking down the river with my headlamp on to find three of these little guys running round my car in the driveway.
I think they must be nesting somewhere in the bush on my section. They usually come ashore just after dark.
I like the compo here.Good job.

This is really a nice shot, however the light bouncing off the water is a slight distraction creating white hot spots. The soft appearance of the penguin in the background gives the picture depth. Paul :)

Nice shot of these little penguins! They are so cute! Nicely composed. Great details and DOF! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Chris

Lovely colours. Very cute subjects. Perfect POV. Nice work. Thanks. :-)

Lovely capture, Chris. I am just back from my vacation and have lots of photos to check out and edit. I will supply a proper critique later my friend.

I visited a penguin breeding colony in the week. It was quite an experience.

Hi Chris,
Excellent composition here with the other guy swimming in the backround. Sharp detail with good DOF. A very high cuteness factor here. The notes are excellent. Great Job!
