An Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus), a common species over most of Australia.
Males of this species have the largest bill of any living bird; 500mm long. They have a wingspan of up to 2.5m which is quite impressive. They are majestic fliers, and this is the first flight shot of them that Iíve taken that Iím happy with.
Usually found in small groups but can congregate in their hundreds when plentiful food is available. They predominantly eat fish, but will also scavenge at refuse tips and have been documented attacking small dogs. There at least two known cases of them eating Chihuahua-sized dogs that got too close for their own good.
This one is a young bird, you can compare with adults Iíve posted previously (here and (here .

Hi Chris, fantastic work,i dream one day to take pics like that, wonderfull sharpenss and colors and impressive point of view,my best best compliments for the high quality, have a nice day,Luciano

My second oldest at 36 is named Chris. He was also the first to call me today on my birthday. And since this was posted on my B'Day and since it so such a wonderful image and from a man who has been on TN just about since it's inception....I thought I would pay homage to you...something that just sort of hit me out of the blue. Your images are so truly natural and so truly heartfelt. Not hard to miss those qualities in a photographer...and a man...

I have a friend from OZ....He is now the sheriff of a county here in Washington State. We speak frequently. I think he may be close in on your age...and so all of those connections and with a viable point to give out..or two make that..and because it is my birthday and finally because it is indeed super shot...then you get these two points for what4ever they are worth beyond that I do not know...

Amazing over-head capture of a Pelican, Chris.
The angle of light creates great contrasts on the subject without affecting the clarity of details on its nether wings.
The deep blue sky gives the impression as if you had used a polarizer filter.
Great image, indeed.
Thanks for sharing it.

Ciao Chris, superb flying pelican, splendid blue sky, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Chris

A splendid shot of this impressive pelican!
I really like the pose here and the superb contrast with the blue sky here - which by the way looks very intense, almost like you've used a polarizer :) Anyway, great work with the exposure, spot-on sharpness and lovely compo.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Chris,
Great capture of this Pelican in flight. I've always thought they look like Jumbo jets when flying! They're so solid! You've caught this one at a nice moment showing fine details against the blue sky. eautiful light too.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla
